Permalink Reply by Riela Molinuevo on November 18, 2011 at 11:39am I'm having a lot of trouble with it, still. My parents get overtly angry if I don't eat thei food, they say that I am not eating balanced and whatnot, that I have to eat everything. They're cutting down on the fruit they buy me (technically I should eat all the fruit they buy me in about a day or 2 and I have been having to make it last for me throughout the week with some rice everyday). My parents refuse to listen to me. They've accepted me being vegan at least; that's a start. :)
Permalink Reply by alejandra solorio on April 3, 2012 at 1:49pm Luckily, my mom is okay with my "weird" eating habits. I turned vegetarian when I was 15 years old and she thought I was crazy. Shortly after, I just dieted a lot and restricted a lot. Shortly after that, I binged a lot (and purged) but she'll never know that. Shortly after that, I declared myself vegan. And I am now raw vegan. She thinks it's weird and extreme and another "phase" of my crazy eating habits but its not. I feel so balanced. She sort of just accepted it. She's benefiting from it too, though. She says that she's following me and is starting to eat more veggies and I always allocate some smoothie for her whenever I make it c: I showed her this video of this woman from Miami that is 70 and she does not look a day over 30 and it was all because of raw veganism. She was like wow :o. If you want to see that video search ageless woman.. i think.
Permalink Reply by Micah Gibson on April 26, 2012 at 12:53pm I think most of the backlash comes from cultural reasons, in other words, generations of your family haven't been raw vegans, and that concept is so far from their comfort zone, so they assume it's bad or hurting your body. The best thing to do, is talk with them, and address all their concerns, and the typical "where do you get your protein" type of questions. Your family might honestly be concerned for your health, and think you'll become sickly and weak from eating raw foods, so try not to give them too hard of a time, just educate them on the facts. I'm the only one in my family for generations who have even considered this lifestyle. My mother has been supportive, and is actually quite aware of the fact that you can get really healthy on this lifestyle. One time I told my grandmother about wanting to eat this way, and she said, well you have to eat meat, and I asked why, and she didn't answer me, it's something that is cultural and something that is accepted as being good for so long, that because just assume it's healthy and good, without even knowing why. So take it easy on your fam, and be patient with them, if your patient, I think you'll find it much easier, and your lifestyle might even rub off on them.
Permalink Reply by Emlee Nicole on June 12, 2012 at 1:58pm My parents are strange combination of worry and indifference. When I told them what I was going to do the first things that came up were... protein, amount, and money. Two days later I got a ton of fruit. It rocked.
My mom will on occasion talk about friend's of hers that 'failed on this diet'... I just explain how it cannot just be a diet, it has to become your lifestyle. She talks about my protein consumption and I just tell her to worry more about b12.
The thing that bothers me the most is when I am eating large portions of something and she tells me I am eating to much. My mother is wonderful and buys me lots of fruit but I wish she would trust me more because I know what I want to be in my body.
I think money is the hardest thing. I don't like stressing them about finances as my brother is soon to go to college. Next year will be interesting. :-)
