we get this kind of thread once in a while and generally it gets dealt with, but here is a chance to work a few things out. i've made a few posts, let's see how others comment.
I found this great website promoting awareness of puppy mills but was a little disturbed that one of their ways of fund raising contributes to the cruelty of another species.
"Turkey Hill MOO Money (ongoing)
A refreshingly easy fundraiser that can raise tons of funds for us. It's easy: Just drink milk, collect the lids, and get Moo Money! Collect your lids and email us for drop-off information."
They seem like a great organization that are trying to stop the abuse and misuse of puppy mill dogs but it really doesn't make sense to me that they promote the cruelty of another species to raise money for the organization. Does anyone find this odd?
I feel this is a little counter productive because they seem to be a good organization but I felt compelled to write an e-mail to point out to them that this form of fund raising is really unaligned with their mission to help animals and that there are other ways of fund raising that don't promote cruelty at all.
My email:
Hi,
I found the united against puppy mills site very informative and it inspired me to take action against such cruelty, but I really found this form of fund raising (moo money) to be very unaligned with your mission to help animals. If you haven't already seen, the milk industry is anything but humane. Mother cows are abused and used and then slaughtered when they can no longer produce milk and the calves which actually need the milk from their mothers are taken away, confined and eventually are slaughtered for the veal industry. Please for a minute think about bringing a precious baby into the world only to have it immediately taken away and placed in confinement until it is slaughtered, meanwhile being tortured and forced to give milk until you are run dry, then the farmers would no longer have use for you so you would be slaughtered for food. Please take a few minutes of your time to watch this video:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_kM387cI4rk&feature=player_embedded
Surely there is a way that you can raise money without promoting the cruelty, abuse, and misuse of another species of animal.
it is odd, but fairly typical.
the spca's have raised funds for years through barbeques and hotdog sales - last year, after considerable protest and letter-writing, did the finally see the folly of their ways (at least around here) and do something about it.
speciesism is not an easy attitude to get people to see and act upon.
ps - Went to Erewhon (huge raw food grocery here in LA) on Sat. Daniel Vitalis was talking. The big crowd was eager to know about how to transition to bear meat. A year ago the same crowd would have all been riteous personal health vegans. There wer…
