30 Bananas a Day!

I am torn right now on what I want to do with my life. I work in retail as an assistant manager. I am so burnt out on it. I have to work 44 hours a week minimum, have crazy customers more times than not, and I just don't feel it is what I want to do with my life. Everyday I wake up and do not look forward to going in. I'm tired of not getting off work until either 7 or 9:30pm and forget having any holidays off. I am supposed to be working towards taking over my own store, but that would require way more hours. I honestly don't want the responsibility. PLUS, I'm selling a product (Clarks Shoes, all leather) that I don't promote and feel bad about it now that I am living this lifestyle. I'm thinking about just working two part time jobs with better hours. I really want to work at the zoo and a garden center, haha. These would not pay me nearly as well and I would lose my benefits/health insurance. However, is it worth it to live a happier more fulfilled life? To have time to do things that I actually enjoy? What would you do??

Main thing is if you think it's worth it, and by the sounds of things you already know what your answer is. It's just a matter of finding the courage to do it :)

One thing though... think long and hard about the zoo job. The imprisonment of animals for our own entertainment is flat out wrong. If you conscience is awake enough to see the fault in selling leather, I imagine it's awake enough to see the fault in working to support animal imprisonment in zoos. Just something to consider.

Garden center could be fun! A job I've loved is produce clerk at a grocery store (preferably whole foods type stores).

My boss was thinking about opening up another Segway tour company in Hawaii, and has suggested that I could manage it. At first I thought, "Awesome! I get to live in the tropics and make good money!" Then I realized that starting up a new store requires sometimes 7 days/week working from morning to sundown, until it is profitable enough to start adding employees. What is the use in living in the tropics if I'm still a slave to someone else?

So now, I remain a tour guide in Texas with dirt-cheap expenses, saving every last penny possible, whilst studying Spanish. I'm working towards a long term goal of being a translator, so I can work for myself and have more freedom.

You will figure out what you want to do. While you are working this much, be sure to be saving money and getting your expenses to a minimum so all of that hard work is actually worth it!

thanks ryan! I'm actually saving up to move back to Austin, TX. I LOVE it there! Hawaii would be amazing though. Good luck!

this is true about the zoo thing Jon. I just thought it would be fun because I love animals. I've always wanted to work at whole foods or somewhere like that, but it seems they are never hiring. The one here still has most of the same people since they've opened. People like it there and don't leave.

Ya, that was my experience too! They're typically awesome places to work. I just lucked out with good timing (or providence, depending on perspective ;)

I can relate to wanting to work with animals because of one's love for them. It's a tricky thing though, as there are very, very few places that stand up to the test of AR standards. An animal sanctuary would be great, or a rescue center that actually cares for the animals (also quite rare). There are, career opportunities with some AR organizations from time to time, and I think some people on 30BaD could help shed light on that if it's something you're interested in. But I think the way to go there is to volunteer for a while first, get a feel for things and 'put in your time'.

In any case, sounds like you might be in for a life-change, and I say GO FOR IT! :)

Not necesarily one or the other (money/happiness). Many of the people who have made the most were/are doing what they loved and didn't consider it work. Find what you love to do and usually enough money to take care of your daily needs (and more?), will follow.

I think you just need to weigh the costs and benefits. If you don't have dependents, it is a much easier choice. If you can downsize your lifestyle to match the reduction in income, I say go for it.

c-ya !! if you dont like the job find another!  do what you love and the money will come, ,,,,or you just work overtime lol

I took a pay cut in 1997 and started ONLY working in things I was passionate about.

The ironic thing is now in 2012 Im making more money than ever before and spending less money than ever before. My goal in 1997 was to become time rich vs money rich. Time rich is always my focus. Time to do whatever I want to do with those I care about.

Hahaha THANK YOU HARLEY!!! This is one of my favorite vids for sure. You've helped me so much man. INSPIRING!

Thanks Harley for another awesome video! :) Time rich definitely beats out money rich.

Ive got mates from Canada, US and EU that live in SE Asia now on the pension. They are all under 40. They said to the welfare office that they cant work in jobs they hate anymore and were deemed 'insane' and given a pension to live off for the rest of their life.

2000$ a month is a LOT of money when your living in nations that only earn 650$ to 4000$ a year.
