As I asked in the title. Why is diet such an issue?
After just reading a post regarding a mother trying to give the best diet possible to her child and being totally opposed to her decision by her immediate family - why IS diet such an issue?
Why are there so many battles within a given family that causes such much contraversy?
In my mind it's lack of education, but how do you educate people who are not willing to be educated?
I remember when I first went vegetarian. For me, that was the best decision I made at that time in my life and no-one was going to change it. Later I became Vegan - and that was the best decision I made at that time, now, I'm raw and that's the best decision.
Q. If I've made decisions that were the best for myself (and my son) at particular times in my life (and through progressive education), then how do you educate a person who is 'A-typical' to be convinced?
Has anyone been in this situation? And how have you dealt with it to help convince your partner / family that what you are doing is the best for the health of the child / ren?
I'm sure that Lunas' post in The Steam Room entitled 'SADfather - 811 mother - child between' would really appreciate the feedback.

not best because that acts as a wolfism and people are not so easy allnessed . but different , different in a way that will lead to less debilitating disease and provide the nutrition to thrive that 1 drop of that other stuff would prevent basically, thus we don't transition. either you 811 or you don't.
i am grateful my mom stood up to her family for me, certainly
direct experience seems most frequently the way people learn. if they are unwilling why waste your energy?

Leaving the original question open.

Interesting that a family problem turns out to be a world problem.
Permalink Reply by Happy Raw Vegan on May 22, 2012 at 10:42am I have always likened it to religion. I once read an article that reprinted (reposted?) a letter that Carl Sagan's wife sent in regards to her husband's death. Regardless of what it said, it was beautiful. Under in the comment section, people were tearing it apart because they were both atheists. I have noticed the same combativeness with food. I have no idea why someone going against the grain causes some to get up in arms, but if you say the "vegan" word, it is very like saying that God does not exist. Sometimes worse I think as agnosticism and atheism is becoming more mainstream. Perhaps food requires some sort of belief system that is threatened by differences and we feel the need to protect the way that we eat with vigor. I mean no offense with this post, please don't get upset.
These same type comments happen on Space.com articles as well. It is really interesting how the internet works. I like reading what people write in comments anonymously, it is like windows into their mind.

The terrible part is that I've heard it from so many people that veganism is like religion/is a religion! Even Youtube is littered with videos of such sort. And "we" are the ones that are intolerant, offensive, and blind-believers. Seriously?! Totally backwards.
Permalink Reply by Happy Raw Vegan on May 22, 2012 at 12:38pm Hehe, I have not heard that, but I do know that people react similarly. The funny thing is that vegans usually have done extensive research into nutrition prior to making the plunge. I did. "Blind believers" HA! You are right, totally backwards!

I've had people say to me that I was brainwashing my child in bringing him up as a vegan and that it should be his choice. I agreed. I then turned it round on them saying that they were brainwashing their child/ren and asked, don't all parents do this to a certain degree? Don't all children grow up with what they know to be 'normal' (their parents lifestyle). The only difference is that my child knows both sides of the story - I provided him with that - have you? I got a lot of tongue-tied, on the spot lame excuses; but never a yes.
I was giving my child the healthiest start I knew and was giving him access to all the information he could devour regarding the use and abuse of animals. Then, when he was ready to make his decision, he was making an informed decision.
Is my son still vegan? Yes. He couldn't see himself any other way.
