Hi I'm new. I wanted to reply to the thread last night from the (biochemistry?) student about why carbs don't make you fat, but i can't find it today. I wanted to ask if this would apply to refined carbs like white pasta also because I saw the psychetruth video 'Are we fattened up like farm animals?' where she said grain carbs cause weight gain and I was concerned it was misinformation. Prior to 80/10/10, white carbs never made me fat anyhow. Thanks if you can help.

So the calories are concentrated. Nothing really makes you fat by itself but it is a piece of the puzzle that can increase fat accumulation. People also tend to put sauces on pasta that add calories and usually fats that can also increase likelihood that the body will not use it efficiently. Cooked carbs are likely to be stored as fat due to the lack of water and fibre. Just like feeding pigs cooked potato makes them gain fat and feeding them the same volume of raw potato makes them lose fat.
As per the 811 principles it is better to get the carbs from raw fruits rather than refined flours. Less likely to gain weight and much better for you.
I would suggest it unnecessary to worry about too much more detail than that. Plus this is a raw vegan web forum :)
Permalink Reply by Linda K on February 1, 2012 at 7:01pm Thanks for your reply, Darren. I prefer fruit carbs myself but feel concerned when I see videos like psychetruth's saying carbs are bad / fattening, which will frighten people off and send them to more animal products. Harley and Freelee are always saying 'carbs don't make you fat' and that cooked carbs are a second best to fruit so I would love clarification that this applies to white carbs also (without the added overt fats), in order to let psychetruth know :)
Permalink Reply by Billie Jean on February 2, 2012 at 5:56am though ive also read that and my friend has a pig as a pet and he is overweight and when he needs to loose weight they give him raw potatoes instead of cooked.
Permalink Reply by Linda K on February 2, 2012 at 6:11am So he ordinarily eats cooked potatoes or something else which they cut out of his diet when he's become overweight?
Permalink Reply by Billie Jean on February 2, 2012 at 6:21am idk, i dont know the complete story haha usually on standard Hugo-diet (thats his name LOL) he would be eating some kind of dry grass with some piggy mush that smells disgusting and cooked potatoes, carrots etc.
and when he needs to lose weight (he is REALLY obese) they just give him raw potatoes and raw carrots instead... idk..
Permalink Reply by Billie Jean on February 2, 2012 at 10:23am why would you think that?
Permalink Reply by Lee Schmidt on February 2, 2012 at 12:38am It might not make you fat, but it will still kill you!
Permalink Reply by Lee Schmidt on February 2, 2012 at 5:21am White processed carbs = death (ex. white pasta). White pasta is the title of this thread. I can pull some sources how these are linked to disease, cancer, etc. but that's pretty easy to find on google.
Sweet potatoes and rice are another story, although I still think they are not optimal.
Permalink Reply by Linda K on February 2, 2012 at 6:01am I believe cooked food isn't optimal either but see cooked grains as a second best option. I know Harley and Freelee recommend rice, potatoes, pasta etc to people who don't want to eat raw vegan, although I haven't heard from them whether it's essential that it's wholemeal pasta. We know the health harming effects of cooked food, but if people are frightened away from eating grains by videos like this, what are they going to eat instead? I don't think they're going to eat sweet potato every day, so it will likely end up being more animal "foods" for many of them, which will be even more harmful to health, animals and environment.

You comment about how eating cooked white pasta is death, as you yourself are eating cooked salmon. How does this make sense?
Permalink Reply by Lee Schmidt on February 3, 2012 at 12:56am To answer your question: White pasta and salmon are two completely different foods.
One is a complete animal protein with high levels of omega 3 fats (more specifically EPA and DHA), vitamin D, vitamin B12, as well as other minerals like zinc and selenium. It is also one of the few types of fish shown to contain little to no heavy metals. Out of all animal products, salmon can be considered the healthiest.
White pasta, on the other hand is a refined carbohydrate that provides us with empty calories and nearly no useful vitamins or minerals. White pasta and other refined white carbs also cause cancer.
I'm not sure how useful the comparison of white pasta and salmon is. Probably not at all. I'm not really sure how your question is relevant to this discussion, but hopefully I've answered it to your satisfaction.
Finally, if you go and look at that thread you'll see at the end I decided to actually try the real 100% HCRV diet with none of the supplements or salmon I mentioned originally. Do your homework next time ;)
