I'm not getting a great deal right now(ASDA is proving my cheapest option for organic bananas), there are no fruit shops nearby and i've tried contacting a few places who deliver but to no avail... If anyone can recommend any companies or has any tips it'd be greatly appreciated :)

Dates - James is right www.yaffa.co.uk is great. They are not organic but they are pesticide free I believe. The dates are huge medjools from here - they are wet, sticky and yummy to the tummy. You are also supporting palestinian farmers.
Alternatively for dates and all other organic fruit in London get down to New Covent Garden Market (Vauxhall) try Langridge Organics (they are used to fruitarians buying from them) or try Choice Organics in Hounslow. I order from both wholesalers and they deliver to most parts of London. I advise you though to GO AND PICK THE FRUIT YOURSELF or what you receive is hit and miss.
My latest purchase from the wholesaler was 3 boxes bananas, box of dates, box of passion fruit, pineapples, amelie mangos and cherimoyas... London may not be NY or the States but for a country that only produces apples and pears (slight exaggeration here) we are EXTREMELY spoilt for choice! Ive seen durian and all sorts here...
The only problem with buying in bulk especially if you are eating them yourself is that the ripening window can be very short. Bear this in mind - it is sometimes better to make a trip to the supermarket (yes Asda is cheapest for organic bananas) every 3/4 days for goods.
If you don't live in London then get to know your local greengrocer!
Also beware - due to the lack of sunlight the majority of the UK are Vit D deficient... so I recommend anyone from the UK to get their bloods taken...

Permalink Reply by William Williams on I go to splott market in cardiff on a sunday. and buy ripe fruit by the box and stuff which doesn't always look good enough for supermarkets. I managed to buy a box of ripe organic bananas today but mostly not organic and supper cheap. sometimes I go to bessemer wholesale fruit market but usually costs more when it's unripe. I have considered ordering organic produce online from a supplier for delivery but it will cost a lot more.

Permalink Reply by Craig Plunkett on York, how I do not miss the fruit selection there! I always went for quantity as opposed to organic stuff. You have to take what you can get a hold of when you're living in somewhere like that.
If you go check the bins round the back of the Waitrose store near halfords (sorry, can't remember the name) you can usually score some produce. I once found about 20 kilos of ripe bananas in there. You probably won't be quite so lucky but there ought to some prizes to take.
I never found a solid place to buy fruit from when I lived in York. My brother is doing the fruit lifestyle and still lives in York. He seems to enjoy his fruit, wherever it is he gets it from. Want his email?

The other day I was in ASDA and I bought five bags of bananas for 25p each one because they were quite ripe for selling. I think they just were in its point, delicious.
I'd like they do the same with all the other fruit.
Permalink Reply by Beckie on I'm in Leeds, Uk and have found the local city centre market to be good for non organic stuffs, but our saviour has been our local grocer. He gets in boxes of bananas (organic and not depending on what he can get) and charges us about £5 for a 12kg box which is very reasonable. He also got in fresh dates just for us and is going to look at getting young thai coconuts too! All this means no lugging heavy boxes on public transport!

Permalink Reply by kate on I contacted a local wholesaler, who is happy to sell me fruit and veg provided I order by the tray/case.
He took a little persuading; I had to produce a typical shopping list in writing before he took me seriously about the quantities.
I collect from his outlet, which is just an industrial unit with a cold room.
The produce is fresh that morning from Covent Garden, and his prices are 30-40% less than Tesco.
As none of his other customers request organic, he has stated he could not give me a good price on that, so I stick with conventionally-grown.
If you can't find a wholesaler, try an independent grocer.
Permalink Reply by nekete on Don't you have here what in spanish is called "consumer group"? That means a group of people who is together to order organic fruit and vegetables from a wholesaler or an independent grocer and obtain better prices that if you go to the shop and buy by yourself.
