30 Bananas a Day!

Hey! Sorry, this question has probably been asked 10 times but I'm very new in the raw family :) (and please excuse my bad english)

I only started the raw-food diet a few days ago and I've been invited by friends for dinner or for lunch at the restaurant several times... and there comes this problem you've probably all had: I don't know what to order!! Do you always bring your own food with you or do you simply not go with your friends to the restaurant?

I had the same problem today with my family: I had a big family lunch and didn't want to annoy everyone with my diet so I ate cooked vegetables because I don't like when people ask me too much questions... I felt really bad afterwards. And I still feel bad about it right now.

I'm always on the road and don't eat at home very often so I really need your advices!

PS: and sorry if my topic is not in the right category...

Have a salad, and if for any reason, cooked is the only way to go, eat high-carb/low-fat and vegan.

+1 but the biggest salads and hclfv cooked meals I had at restaurants were never enough for me... so eat a big fruit meal before you go to the restaurant ;) You can also bring your own food, and ask them to prepare it, but I don't like to explain it to everybody (:

Also, eat before you go if possible.  That way you can order a salad or fruit plate and still get enough to eat (the restaurant portions in this case would not be anywhere near the amount of food you'd eat normally)

I'm new at this too but that's just my two cents:)  We also had a family event today and I was able to get away with loading up on the fruit salad:)

Also, if you're on the road a lot, could you pack a cooler full of ready to eat produce with ice packs and just take it with you?

Yes thank you very good ideas! I also think that I should be more courageous and simply tell my family that I don't want to eat this sh*t... but aaw it's hard.

Well, I think that when you're just starting out, as i am, it's best to keep it to yourself actually, lol...  There is too much that your'e trying to learn and it will not help you to try and defend this way of eating - you risk second guessing yourself, feeling like a weirdo, etc, lol.  I was thankful today at the family gathering that I have a 2 month old baby that needed a lot of my attention - I rarely get to sit down and eat a whole meal like the rest of the family does so nobody really noticed I was only eating the fruit salad and some veggies.

I've felt cornered before with the family - they were well-intentioned but still it's difficult to feel the need to explain everything - it's difficult to explain stuff like this without having others feel like you're judging them or suggesting that they need to change as well.  And it's especially true for family.

I just plan on eating this way for a while and then if people ask I'll be honest but give as little information as possible, lol.  And after a while it will be easier because you'll be experiencing the benefits and they will see it as well, and will be less likely to think your diet is a 'danger' to you:)

You are so right Marrie about the trying to defend yourself and being 'green' at this lifestyle then sounding like a weirdo as you are second guessing. The results will show for them selves with time and people will want to know what you are doing and some may even be interested too.
I'm going out to dinner tomorrow. Will be interesting..but yes, will order a salad with no dressing...
and going to Thailand in 2 weeks - even tho' its meant to have one of the BEST fruits in the world.I have a feeling it might be hard for me as my fiance cant wait for all the seafood. So I will just have to buy lots of fruit and keep it with me/eat beforehand.

i always order the Cobb salad with-out the meat, dairy and crotones or the house salad which come with no eggs or cheese just saw no crotones NO DRESSING.

or you can also just edit whatever salad the restaurants have and i usually tell them to put avocado on them so their easier to eat and ask for a half of lemon to use as a dressing.

and when its not at a restaurants bring your own food or eat enough before then just bring sum fruit juice or a smoothly in a water bottle if you feel you want a taste of something

HOPE THIS HELPS : ) !

This is a major obstacle all of us have to overcome.  To each one there is a perfect answer.  Mine is to avoid going out.  My friends know of my problem and all support this.  Instead to share a meal with others I make the food which is raw of course and share with them.  They all love this and I get to socialize with them happily.

If I traveled, which I don't, I would simply buy fruit and lots of it wherever I went.  If I was at a restaurant I would ask for a huge fruit plate or platter of raw vegies and let everyone know I enjoy fruit / vegies.  People are starting to understand another's personal choice.  I wouldn't make a big deal out of it especially since you are so new to this lifestyle.  Be gentle with yourself and realize with every situation there will be a perfect answer for you at that moment.  Sure, plan as much as you can, but DON'T PANIC!  LOL

Thank you very much for all your answers and support! Today I had lunch with my new colleagues and it was terrible for me but I tried not to show it. The problem is that they always have lunch together and always go to the restaurant. FML

Yes, it can be awkward... As others have said before, I would have a salad with no dressing. And I always carry some pieces of fruit, usually apples or bananas with me (I have lunch at work) along with a small bottle to fill with water. I'm known in the staff room for eating raw carrots all the time (I'm CarrotGirl!) and my colleagues only know I'm a vegetarian.

As Maggie said, it's far too early for me to mention I'm raw but I love preparing raw dishes and I hope to please my friends and family with them. I hope my new lifestyle will soon show on my body so that people will be interested and more open to difference. For the time-being, my coworkers have noticed I've shrunk and I just said that I was eating lots of fruit and veggies. True, isn't it? ;-)

In a restaurant, if you look at the salad menu, you can pretty well tell what ingredients they might have that are raw, it might be just tomatoes and lettuce, but you could ask for a salad with the ingredients you want, no sauce or sauce on the side. The other day I ordered a salad--it had other stuff with it but I remain flexible.  When I saw how little lettuce there was, I asked for extra "salade verte".  There was no problem.  People are starting to notice I've slimmed down and they say I have "meilleur mine" (that's hard to translate) and I just say we are mainly eating eating fruit and salad right now.  Nobody has heard of 80 10 10.

Depends on the type of restaurant also.  Out here in Brittany, sometimes the "ouvriers" type place will have fruit as a dessert choice.  When there is a buffet for the entrée, you can usually get some raw vegetables, at least grated carrot, and maybe pick the cheese out of the cabbage salad?  :-)
