30 Bananas a Day!

Is my trainer messing with me? Calipers reliable for measuring body fat?

Hello there friends,

I have been HCRV for almost 5 months solid, no overts. I had my body fat percentage measured at the gym when I was about 4 weeks in, and I found out that I was at 16.1%. At that time I weighed 155lbs, I am 5'10''.

So. Today at the gym I weighed in at 175lbs, with shoes and clothing, and am now at 25.3% body fat according to the calipers. I know that dexascan is waay better, I unfortunately do not have access to one.

My trainer is giving me a whole lot of 'I told you so's", and telling me to go paleo. This is obviously not an option for me, or anyone else with half a brain. However, I am startingt o doubt the magic of fruit, and I am devestated to feel like this diet has failed me because I have given it all I've got for the last several months. I've been spending between $500 and $700 a month on (mostly) organic fruit. I have made many positive lifestyle changes since beginning my hcrv journey, such as quitting smoking, drinking alcohol and coffee/tea, dropping all spices and condiments, and being more active.

How can this be? Looking for some support and any helpful information before I go donate two cases of bananas to Occupy Portland. :(((((

Respectfully,

Caitlin

Hey Caitlin! I am sure you are frusturated!

Why don't you take your measurements with a tape measure and keep track that way!?

I don't get on the scale anymore because it doesn't tell you what you gain/lose --- fat/muscle/fluid.

Analyze how you feel before you give up!. Also, think of everything you gave up! Wow! What an accomplishment!

Continue exercising. And don't forget a little strength training because muscle burns more than fat! Good luck!

All good advice. Thank you! :)

my health teacher told us that in order for those tests to be accurate, you're not supposed to eat or drink anything the day of because excess water/food in your system will give you a higher body fat percentage reading.
try the test on an empty stomach / with no water.
and why do you care? you should be more concerned with how you look; weight is just a number on a scale.

I was very well hydrated before the reading, but it was on an empty stomach. I monomealed watermelon the night before, and probably peed 8 times overnight. Woke up, drank a liter of water, and rode my bike to the gym. I agree, I shouldn't be so concerned with numbers. Thank you. :)

The Pinch Method is not reliable. It depends on the calipers, the site, and the person doing the test. How you look in the mirror and how your clothes fit, your strength levels, etc are better indicators. If you really want to know your exact body fat percentage, the gold standard is hydrostatic weighing, which I am sure you know about. Just be sure to spend a little time learning how to empty your lungs completely of all air before you finally dunk your dead under water, then breathe out as much as possible again. Some people find this hard to do. But you can get a most accurate reading.

Awesome! I will look into finding one of those. :)

Hi Cait, I understand your frustration. And you look great in your vids. Healthy and lean. What type of water are drinking? Are you regular? I am assuming that you are all good on those but you didn't mention it. Another thought here, inflammation is the bodies response to healing and healing can take years...it may be that your body is just going through a rebuilding process that takes longer than we expect. If you feel good-forget about the number and be happy :) Focusing on the numbers is bad for the mind. I am so guilty of obsessing over a scale! I am trying to just be happy and healthy. I do envision myself lean and fit like Freelee with a smile and then go about my merry day! And you are so awesome don't let a little number setback drag you down-hang in there Fruity!!

:))

i dont use calipers on my clients there crap!! whats your cal intake... if your trainer is telling you something you dont agree with you can fire them!!!! maybe its your trainer what is the program your on !! ive never once had a client go up that much in fat EVER unless it was created for powerlifting

I don't pay him, the gym I go to does. I realize now how unreliable the calipers are, I need to work on finding another way to figure out an accurate number. I have been eating 3-4 thousand cals/day.

Unfortunately I am not currently going to college. I finished up my Associate's degree last summer and am probably heading back soon. :)

Thanks for the info, I will totally look in to this asap!

i am no expert, yet i think its totally awesome you quit smoking and drinking! Congratulations on that, I had a what da .... moment about a year and a half ago too, people told me to be more consistent and i was like consist my... yet I was hitting the weights heavy along with eating cooked beans and rice ,which basically cancelled out my work out. So write down your day and disect it and you, find somen' you ain doin right. Maybe its as imple as eating late, I am sure you will find answers here, just please don't give up. "can't never could do anything."

Keep your head up regroup and keep pushing forward, sometimes its what appears to be a setback is what shoots us ahead forward, re-evaluate and don't you neva giv up yo!

peace be upon you
