30 Bananas a Day!

Jared

What kinds of looks and comments do you get at the grocery store?

I can't be the only one here that gets a lot of strange looks and comments from people at the supermarket just because I'm buying a lot of fruits and vegetables.

It's very rare that I go to the store and the cashier doesn't say something about how many fruits and vegetables that I'm buying, but one thing that I've noticed is that almost all of the comments that I get from cashiers are comments that I know that they would never dare say to me if I was overweight...

- "Are you really going to eat all of this food yourself?"
- "I didn't even know it was possible for one person to eat so much food!"
- "So when you get home do you just sit there and eat nonstop 24/7?"
- "Oh my God!" (Saying this while looking at my shopping cart with eyes and jaw wide open.)
- "I can't believe how much food you eat!"
- "Do you gain like 20 pounds each time you eat a meal?"
- "So is all this food just for you or do you live with a few sumo wrestlers?

Like I said they would never joke about the large amounts of food that I buy if I was overweight, and since it's impossible to become overweight on this diet I guess that I'm going to have to hear these comments for now on. (If you get comments like these all the time, be happy because it means that you're fit, and you look healthy enough that they can openly joke about you're "Eating Disorder" because it's obvious that you're doing something right.)

I don't get annoyed by all the comments and looks that I get though because I realize that most grocery stores simply weren't designed for people like us. For the average person just eating an apple a day would be a challenge, so if you decide that you want to do a mono day or two of only eating apples you're probably going to end up buying more apples than the average 10 - 20 people would. Plus, years ago I used to buy less fruits and vegetables in 1 year than I do now in a week, and back then I probably would have looked at someone who lived entirely on fruits and vegetables as being strange.

One of my favorite comments was last week when I was shopping at Trader Joes and I was over in the banana section looking for ripe bananas and an old lady approached me and said, "Excuse me, what aisle do you guys keep your soy milk in?" I told here where it was and then I smiled and explained to her that I didn't actually work there and that I was just a customer, and then she said, "Oh, I'm sorry, I assumed that you worked here because it looked like you were going through and picking out all of the bad bananans that need to be thrown away."

I'm curious to know what kinds of comments you get when you are really stocking up on certain foods.

Oh people say ALL KINDS of things.

I have three answers I've found that works best for me in these situations:

1) I'm an athlete so I have to fuel myself with plenty of fruits and vegetables, or I will fall behind in my sports.
2) I have lots of siblings and we all love to eat fruits and vegetables.
3) Well, my doctor told me that I need to eat more fruits and vegetables, or I will not feel my best.

They don't tend to ask any more questions after these.

I definitely have gotten,
"Do you plan to make Banana Bread?"
I too hear things like,
"How big is your family?"
"Are you having a party?"
People are dumbfounded when they find out I don't have a family and i eat it All by myself.
Most the people at the grocery store know me now though... welll... in the produce department cuz thats the only place I usually go, unless i'm picking somehting up for someone else.
Sometimes they get the "overripe" bananas all ready for me early becuase they think i'll be coming in.
I have explained that I eat healthfully, and I make a lot of smoothies, and they just really don't question me all that much anymore..
Call me crazy, but we'll see who really goes "crazy" first! :P

I've been asked if I have pet monkeys (for the bananas), or pet rabbits (for the lettuce).

I seriously think I have heard every one of these. I always answer truthfully (sometimes with a slightly teasing voice). I just tell them that fruit is the best thing in the world to eat.

One time me and Zeth (who is also on here) were buying a case of bananas and Carrie (also on here, but I didn't know it at the time!) came up to us and I knew she was going to ask us something and I was just about to roll my eyes because everyone was asking us stuff at that point because we has SO much fruit. She actually asked if we were following 80 10 10. And I was like "What?" And then we found out we were both on this site.... pretty hilarious. It reminds me back when I first went vegan in 1993 and it was such a shock to met another vegan randomly. haha.

I'm lucky - I do almost all of my shopping at the Reading Terminal Market's produce area. Because its so close, I just walk over 5-7 times each week and fill my bag. The prices are incredibly low and I can fill a shopping bag for $5-10...a big help, now that my tiny community organizer salary is now gone and I haven't yet found a new job.

Because they only sell produce there and I'm buying modest amounts every day (as opposed to massive amounts once a week), I don't stand out at all.

Hi Lared

I usually get 'Aren't you healthy!', to which I smile and reply 'YES! Feeling fit and fabulous on fantastic fruit!'

The one thing I've noticed is that people will think nothing of saying to a slim stranger 'oh, aren't you thin?' alomost like it's a crime, but rarely do you hear them approach a someone who is dimensionally challenged (overweight) and say 'aren't you fat' .........

By any chance has anyone reading this ever had a cashier look at what you're buying and ask, "So are you on 80/10/10?"

I would freak out if that happened to me. I've been asked if I'm on a raw food diet a couple of times, and I've even been asked if I'm a fruitarian once, but it would really shock me if someone where I lived actually asked me specifically if I was on 80/10/10.
