30 Bananas a Day!

What fruits other than bananas get well ripen after picking?

Hello fruity people! :) New here and curious about what fruits (other than banana) you can purchase green and they will ripe at home.

Is it ok to buy green mangoes? Do they still ripe properly?

What about avocado?

Thanks! :)

Mangoes and avocados ripen after picking. So do most sweet fruits such as dates, persimmons, sapote, etc.

A lot of non-sweet fruit (acid/sub-acid) doesn't though.. peaches, watermelons, figs, pineapples do not.

Indeed both mangoes and avocados ripen after picking. You can accelerate the ripening process by placing the fruit in question in a paper bag along with another piece of fruit. This increases the ethylene exposure which is what ripens fruit. For instance I place hard avocados in a paper bag with an apple or banana. Within a few days the avocado is ripe for use.

I also pick papayas from my papaya tree when there are flecks of yellow on the fruit. Placing them in a paper bag with a banana or apple ripens the papaya fully over the course of a week or ten days.

Thank you guys! :)

Most fruits do.  I can't think of one that hasn't.  Yes avocados do.  If it is a mango make certain it has as much red in it as possible.  I'm talking about the Tommy Mangos - not atalfo.  Atalfo's are smaller and yellow.

Also, I have never ate raw dates before, but I found a source that can ship them to me from outside the country. They will be in large quantities so I'm wondering how long will they last? Should I keep them in the refrigerator? How many grams of dates do you usually (or maximum) eat in a day?

I keep mine in the frige.  I don't eat them too often at this time.  I've had mine in the frige for 6 weeks and they are fine.

Great! I am thinking about having them as a backup high caloric fruit if they are so long lasting!

What are the main fruits you eat at this time of the year? Thanks!

Bananas, mangos, kiwi, pineapple, strawberries, citrus varieties.  I live in Boise, Idaho and the organic stores are popping up everywhere.  One just went in 1/2 mile from where I live and my main store is close by also.  I am happy about this.  Whole Foods is going to open here soon also. They drug their feet and 2 other organic stores came in while they dikered around with the lawyers. LOL

Regarding oranges, apples, bananas, and some melons and tomatoes, I allow to ripen up to a week in advance.  The fruit I am eating today, I bought last week:D))) I have found it to be much sweeter this way.

Peace, PK
