My initial experience (1972 through early 1973) with 100% raw fruitarianism, after I got past the first major cleansing stages, was very positive indeed: my physical health improved, the need for sleep decreased, I had lots of energy (some of the time), and I had a pleasant "light" or "euphoric" mental feeling that I thought was a spiritual feeling at the time. Things went well for a while, and my spirituality seemed to grow as well. However, there were trouble signs, even in 1972--emaciation, constant hunger, frequent weakness, and intermittent fatigue.
That is one of the first signs we are not eating enough: we cant sleep much and mistake it for needing less sleep. All humans need at least 12hours a night rest just like bonobo's get as we have evolved from that equatorial environment. Then the emaciation, constant hunger and fatigue set in..not being able to sleep was the undercarbed canary and unfortunately all the books Tom read, NONE of them mentioned how to eat all you care for, rather, they all talked about 'avoiding overeating..' and Tom constantly felt guilty for eating dates despite him having an anorexic BMI.
In the spring of 1973, convinced by reading Arnold Ehret's book Rational Fasting that I needed to fast to make me even purer (and get rid of the few problems I was still experiencing), I went on a 4-day water fast. The results were disastrous: my "light" mental feeling disappeared, my strength vanished and I was weak and fatigued, and my weight dropped to the life-threatening level of 88 pounds I am 6'1" = tall). I was convinced then that fruit was the "ideal food, and one true diet"--and my foolish belief in the fruitarian "party line" nearly
So now Tom is down to 40kg and at 6"1, thats close to organ failure for sure. Thats the downward
spiral anorexics get into, they think they need to purify even more but what they need to do is start
chowing down the calories so their digestion gets stronger via use vs weaker by even less usage.
By eating copious amounts of fruit carbs, our energy levels start to rise and we can start to exercise
and then eat even more and build up the hormone levels in our stomachs and digestive tract. We
can now extract more nutrients from our food and we start to step into a positive cycle.
So conclusion? What we can learn from Tom Billings experience is that daily fruit carb calories need to be high
so we can avoid the anorexic behaviour that can induce an anorexic condition of emaciation,
weak digestion, psychosis, fatigue etc. Many people today in the raw foods movement hover close
to the danger zones and many fall over and blame a plant based diet, sweet fruit etc vs their breatharin
approach to a raw vegan lifestyle. Aka Daniel Vitalis who tried to be a thriving raw vegan on a diet
of coconut oil, olive oil and kale. He hit rock bottom pretty quick and now speaks out against a raw and or vegan
lifestyle. So we see that the ONLY successful people in the raw foods movement today are the high
calorie, high fruit, low fat 'raw vegans'. They are active vs sedentary, they understand basic human
physiology regarding naturally fluctuating bodyweight levels over the seasons, how important fruit carbs
are and hydration, rest, sleep, sun etc.
Ive been known to write corrections and warnings in fruit/carb phobic books in bookstores. Ive met
too many people that have developed anorexia/chronic fatigue/depression/disordered eating from eating a low cal,
low carb lifestyle. Its gotta stop
cos its giving the movement a bad name and sending people in the opposite direction and even more
confused.. :(

Permalink Reply by Mark Spencer on May 29, 2012 at 11:52am Have you seen the page entitled "Investigating Raw Vegan and Other Diet Gurus" on beyondveg...?
http://www.beyondveg.com/billings-t/special/raw-vegan-gurus.shtml
The guy seems to be waging a vendetta against any prominent figure in the raw vegan world including a few references he made toward you Harley. He also slams Dr. Graham on this page.
My apologies if you are already aware of this page.
Permalink Reply by DURIANRIDER on May 31, 2012 at 1:54pm I contacted Tom Billings and he updated the information on me to include what was true vs false.
Thanks for the heads up.
Permalink Reply by EB on June 11, 2012 at 1:10am The man claims to be scientific, or at least to make use of reason, but he practices Ayurveda (no offense to people who believe in Ayurveda, but it's not based on science, only on tradition), and writes that "Mother cow" is generous for giving us her milk. That makes him lose all credibility in my eyes. And obviously, he completely lacked common sense for all the years that he tried fruitarianism.
