Permalink Reply by veganmama on May 30, 2012 at 8:05am no i dont have white spots on my nipple atm. i did have a blister about a month ago, i popped it or so i believe i did and come to think of it seems like thats when all this started.
ive tried different nursing positions, hot compresses and massaging.
right now though i can barley touch my nipple the pain is just too intense i cant see myself nursing on it anymore id rather cut my hand off.so idk what to do
and i nurse on that breast 85% of the time because it makes more milk then my other
there ARE lumps these lumps have been there for about a month the SAME lumps they wont go away because hes not sucking the clog out which is why idk what to do
my baby is 3.5 months and yes he is my first
Have you had someone help you with the latch? Is the babe's nose and chin touching your breast while nursing? This is crucial. Improper latch can cause so much pain and problems. I'm not trying in anyway to undermine your mothering...I only want to help you figure this out. I nursed my 3 and had mastitis and candida in my ducts and it was excruciating, I remember crying while nursing. I remember deep breaths and warm compresses helping me get through the latch on.
And what's your breastfeeding schedule look like? (I know there's no 'schedule' but ball park how often) Is there a period at night when babe is going longer?
You'll get through this and later on you'll help another mama suffering. The pain will end. We're all feeling it for you. Rest, relax, you'll figure this out.
Permalink Reply by Maggie on May 30, 2012 at 10:23am hmmm - the actual nipple doesn't usually hurt much with just mastitis. Do you think you could also have thrush? Or like Mary TG mentioned, it could be the latch that makes your nipple hurt and if babe's latch is not ideal, he may not be emptying milk from the breast and perhaps this is contributing to the mastitis?
Is his tongue/inside of his mouth whitish? My guess is that you might have thrush on top of everything. At 3.5 months, your nipples should not be hurting that bad unless there is some sort of issue with his latch or thrush or something.
Get thee to a LACTATION CONSULTANT! In the US (not sure where you live) many will make a visit to your house. Really - an LC will be able to help you figure out what's going on!
And a HUGE CONGRATULATIONS to you momma!! You've done a GREAT job nursing for 3 1/2 months! I love your profile pic too:) Really captures that moment so well:)
Permalink Reply by Greenmama on May 30, 2012 at 2:37pm Yeah, nipple pain can be the worst. Worse than labor. ;) Hang in there, Mama. I know you know all the benefits of breastfeeding, but sometimes when you're desperate you might need a reminder... your baby is receiving 4 times lower rate of cancer, 4 times lower rate of Type 1 diabetes, 8 times lower risk of dying of SIDS, etc. The benefits go on and on.
It is very common to have one breast larger than the other and one that produces more milk than the other. The side that produces less is usually on the same side as your dominant hand.
However, nursing your baby on the heavy producing side will create even more of an imbalance, because the more suction, the more that breast produces. If you are reducing suction by only nursing on that side 15% of the time, then you are going to reduce that breast's milk flow significantly.
I would switch off the breasts 50/50. The baby will increase nursing time a bit at first, until the slow breast can catch up. But you will be less lopsided and less prone to difficulties.
According to LLL Breastfeeding Answerbook, reasons for recurring mastitis include:
nipple damage due to cracked, or bleeding nipples
dried milk secretions on the nipple (can come off with warm washclot)
nipple shields
constrictive clothing
breast abnormalities (ie due to surgery, biopsy)
too much saturated fat
high sodium intake
exposure to allergens (accompanied by migraines or bruising easy or hives
excessive upper arm exercise
fatigue and stress
lowered resistence to infection and anemia (if run down, tired) Anemia is common contributor to repeated mastitis.
overabundant milk supply (express when uncomfortable if baby is satiated)

feeding him is becoming tolerable, but perhaps because ive noticed hes not sucking hard as usual. i dont think theres much milk in it though because hes crying and getting frustrated on that breast because sooo much of the breast is clogged. the clog is still present he cannot suck it out!
breast AND nipple is in so muchhhhhhh pain
i dont think i have thrush though, i believe all the pain is stemming from my very hard lump in my breast
Permalink Reply by Maggie on May 30, 2012 at 10:59am Get an LC to take a look! Seriously - it should really help with at least diagnosing exactly what's going on!
Permalink Reply by Chanda Esparza on May 30, 2012 at 11:02am What your doctor might have to do is insert a needle in order to relieve some of the clog... It's usually milk that's thickened up because it's stuck there. Or if you've got mastitis, which is, as someone else said, an infection in the plugged milk duct, you'll get antibiotics of some sort. If it's really bad, your doctor might do both.
When I had a plugged milk duct, I found that sleeping with cabbage leaves in a loose nursing bra really helped the pain. I would also take showers as cold as I could stand them on my breast, and then press my knuckles against my breast bone and push really, really hard towards the nipple, in order to break apart the clog and push it towards the exit. I would also alternate hot and cold compressed. I also pumped like crazy because I wanted that damned thing OUT. After about a week and half, I finally had relief.
Permalink Reply by Greenmama on May 30, 2012 at 2:41pm Just to reassure you a bit. Your nipple has multiple openings and your breast has multiple milk ducts, so while he may be getting less, it is unlikely that he is getting nothing on that breast.
If you can't afford lactation consultant, LLL Leaders are volunteer lactation counselors.

Permalink Reply by veganmama on May 31, 2012 at 3:04am thanks guys for everything. the pain is less today but this not something new. im sure itll return in a weeks time if i cant get this darn clog out.
the reason i hesitated to go to the doctors or get it checked is because i was in florida with no med insurance since i was just visiting and am originally from canada where doctors and LC's are free. i changed my flight and im going home as i type this on the plane.
hopefully someone will be able to help me out there
thankyou<333
