i was just having a serious discussion with my boyfriend about humans dying and the impact it causes on life. i said "one thing i dont understand.... how can a meat eater cry about a human dying.... and then sit down to a steak?" i just dont understand!
heres the difference between us.
i am a life long vegan. i have never consumed animal flesh. i have the same amount of compassion to human life to that of an animals life.
he is a life long meat eater, recently working towards being vegan. he sees human life value to be greater than animal life value.
am i off my rocker or do you feel that animal life is equally as valuable as human life?
Yes I think it is equal and in many cases greater.
that is a very good question and there is no right answer except what we believe about it. It can go many different ways depending on how you were raised and what is comfortable for you to believe. If you believe in past lives and that we could have been animals in the past then we are all one anyways so yes it is the same. Then the scientific mind might say something like this, well which life is more valuable a human or an elephant? a human or a dog? a human or a chicken? a human or a rat? a human or a frog? a human or an ant? a human or a bacteria and so on and so forth with no real line to draw between the two, its up to you to draw the line where ever fits most comfortable believing.
One thing i do know is i went vegan for a reason and seeing animals suffer makes me cringe more than seeing humans suffer sometimes since humans have the choice to be ignorant and animals seem more innocent. I am currently working on having more compassion for all humans at this stage in life.
i can relate to you in that sometimes i have much more compassion towards animals than humans. to a meat eater this idea is absolutely nuts! but as a vegan.... it just kinda makes sense. we take so much dominance over animals, how could you not have more compassion for the helpless?
here is the position i am reading your discussion - there is no way would i be in a relationship with an animal abuser & slaughterer because his presence in the same room offends me.
every breath he takes you would smell the rotting corpses down his throat - the toilet, well lets not go there - and to be intermit with a meat eater — pfft well thats just not going to happen.
his very sweat is the juice of decaying animals screaming injustice - he lives because countless innocents were murdered.
so ..... knowing i feel this way, how would you comment on your discussion ?
if the shoe was on the other foot - this would be a good representation see link
the thought makes me cringe.
he is vegetarian just eats egg and dairy products still now and then. we live in different towns so none of that has really been an issue. im really glad he is switching to veg though i dont think i could be in a relationship with a meat eater ever again its horrid.
Meat eating is horrid. It's so nice when you can be in a relationship where no ones eating dead animals. It took me a good while to get to that stage with my man,i actually couldn't have it any other way.The smell eeeeh, shudder* the breath, and looking at someone munching on a dead animal is just so vile.
All life is valuable equally valuable, from the tiniest ant to the largest animal and all in between,no one is above another. Those humans that think bc an animal doesn't speak their language then the animal is a lesser life form,is sadly deluded.
i really like that last line there. and its completely true. thanks for your perspective :)
Superb answer JC! :D
I'm with you on this, always have been. What he's missing is knowledge and connection the world outside of our human bubble. Spend more time outside with him, noticing the things he doesn't notice at first, and as he becomes more familiar with how amazing plants and animals are (where they are able to be successful, how they cope with extremes that humans can't, how diverse they are physically and in what they do) I assure you he'll begin to understand you better :o).
If a baby and a kitten were about to be run over by a train, and you could sit back with infinite decision time and select to save the baby, save the kitten, or flip a coin, would you flip a coin?
put the coin on the track and derail the train :P
kidding. but really, cats are intelligent and instinctual so it would probly move when it felt the vibrations. humans are the incompetent ones that need saving!
