30 Bananas a Day!

I am writing on the behalf of Lemoy Andressohn who was accused of manslaughter in 2003 after her five and a half month old child died due to what was later confirmed to be a birth defect. It was claimed that it was the raw vegan diet that caused the untimely death. She was able to have the manslaughter accusation dropped after providing scientific evidence of this birth defect, but was charged with four counts of neglect; the prosecution claiming that her other four children were malnourished. The children were perfectly healthy other than a lack of vitamin D from not drinking cows milk. Lemoy and her husband spent 99 days in prison, (Lemoy continued to be raw in prison) unwilling to settle with the plea offered (forced permanent dietary changes for her children). Although she went to prison, Lemoy's other beautiful, healthy, children who were all raw from birth were forced to eat soybeans for protein while she was in prison. Lemoy has been fighting back for a long time and would most like her name to be cleared. The courts have continued to make her life difficult and are looking for any excuse to send her back to prison. They can't find anything for now. She is optimistic with the new judge handling here case and is fighting for the courts to rule that she did nothing wrong, and to leave her alone once and for all. She is concerned with future ramifications both for herself and children, as well as other raw fooders if she does not clear her name. A suit may eventually follow, however Lemoy is not pursuing that course of action at this time.

Lemoy has used a public defender for her cases in the past. Her most recent case against to prosecution has be denied the use of a public defender, so Lemoy is trying to raise money for the use of a private attorney. She needs 14,500 dollars to do so. I am thinking I might try and sent up an online donation in the near future. Please stay tuned for that. Lemoy sells raw food every Saturday at the Coconut Grove farmers market. She has a great group of kids. I've played football with them! My heart goes out for there cause. Possibly more importantly is our civil liberties being infringed upon.

Here are pictures of the newspaper articles covering the cases and a group picture at the potluck showing our support:

Lamoy* and her family need all the support they can get. They will be hosting raw "potlucks" for at least the next two/three weeks on Sundays.

Good job, Jourdan. You should make the first picture bigger.
I was told not to :P
No!!!! Vampires are totally cool.
Although, in principle, I agree with supporting them as much as possible. I think it is also wise to point out that the rawfood lifestyle can have many unhealthy, dangerous pitfalls such as enemas and low fruit-high fat diets. I haven't followed this story close enough, but the first question that comes to mind is why was the baby not being exclusively breastfed at that age? If the mother's breast milk was inadequate, donated breast milk would have been a viable alternative.
The baby was being breastfed until Lamoy's milk supply became unavailable, I believe she was still trying to breastfeed and her nipples were very sore, red, dried out, irritated. She didn't want the baby to accidentally drink her blood.

And no, they didn't feed her low fruit or perform enemas. She was a baby. I have never even heard of baby enemas. Maybe you weren't referring to that. I don't know.
I was thinking of trying to get the ACLU involved. This may be too small in their opinion. Let me know what you guys think. I think food is the next thing following gay rights.

Via I think it's a good point. We asked about it and I cannot comment further about that topic at this time. I do feel we can talk about it after I have had a chance to talk with Lemoy. I'd prefer to focus on the support of dietary freedom for now. The fact is the baby would have died regardless of dietary preferences.
I totally agree that food is the next thing following gay rights. We have the right to chose what we put into our bodies, and just because it isnt the common SAD diet, doesnt mean people or the gov. should take away those freedoms. All the work in educating their children about food, and showing them the proper way to live, eat and exercise, and some one is now shoving pizza and unhealthy foods in their mouths is just wrong. I hope and pray these poor parents prevail in this fight.
This is extremely upsetting and shocking. It is amazing with all the diseases that a standard diet can cause, and all the children suffering from diabetes and asthma and allergies, that no one prosecutes their parents, yet when some parents are really trying to do the best for their children, that they receive this much abuse from the system.
Very good point Alison.
it's an ugly business, but without an atourney the courts wouldn't listen no matter how elegant you were,

i read about this before i got into raw, we can only learn lessons so more details would be interesting.
Although I fully support a parents right to feed their child and raise them in their within their belief systems, I am wondering which type of raw diet these children are being fed. Assuming it is 811, (and that is an Assumption), how old are the children? Even Dr. G doesnt support those ratios for young children. He believes they can suceed and flourish on raw, but at much higher rations.

At any rate, please keep us informed on any thing you plan to do to support them in their time of need. I am sure many of us would love to help them.

Oh and just one example of Dr. G's thoughts on 811 and youngsters... http://www.vegsource.com/talk/raw/messages/100008591.html
The children do not follow 811. But they eat a lotttt of fruit and not too much raw gourmet. They are the happiest, most energetic, and intelligent, loving, beautiful kids I've ever met.

The thing is that when the children got taken away and the parents went to jail, after soy was added to their diet the children were being fed breads, pasta, peanut butter, rice, etc. So they aren't even 100% raw any more.

I am aware that Woyah (the baby that passed) was being fed a lot of fruit and veggie juices, coconut, avocado, banana, soft fruits, etc. aside from breast milk.
