So I've seen these before in the Asian market and I always wondered what the prickly giants were like.
The one I got had a sort of very mild, oniony, smell and when I bring the fruit to my mouth, to be frank, I'm not that excited about it. But then after I start chewing it, and get that candy like flavor, I can't seem to stop. It's quite addictive!
So is this sort of like a durian-lite? I mean I have read that durian has a sort of sweet flavor and oniony smell, although from the descriptions it must be much stronger than the jackfruit. Also from what I've read, durian is a more creamy consistency?
Anyone on here eaten both? How do they compare in your opinion?
Cutting up the jackfruit, man! You could probably fix broken china with that sap!

To me they were nothing alike other than their external appearance and effort it takes to prize the goodness out of the shell. As you saw, jack is rubbery, where good D is quite creamy. And yes, D is far stronger smelling.
My jack sperience was with one already cut so I didn't feel the sap, but I've seen it in a video. You're right--it's like something out of Alien!

Is durian sweet like jackfruit? I am very smell oriented, so I'm not sure if I could get past it. But if its tasty like jackfruit, I might be able to deal with it. I did notice also that after eating the jackfruit I felt a little garlicy if you know what I mean. Oiniony is probably more the smell but garlicy in that after I ate a bunch it was sort of coming out of me. Again, I am very smell sensitive, so others might not notice anything at all.
Permalink Reply by Sunshine on June 10, 2012 at 4:03pm jack fruit is better than durian to me look at the ratios on it. it's perfect food
it really sweetens up smoothies too if you don't want to chew all that rubberishness
1.99 a pound so i never buy a whole one just pieces they chop up
oh and the orange one is sweeter than the yellow
Permalink Reply by Chris P. on June 11, 2012 at 3:06am Thanks, I was wondering how it would be in a smoothie, I'll have to give that a try! I have a ton (OK, well not quite a ton now...) of it. I was able to get it at $0.99/lb so I thought that was a good deal. I figured I'd be bummed to waste $20 if I didn't like it, but it wouldn't be the end of the world.
The one I got was green on the outside and inside the flesh was white and sort of like string cheese. The edible pods were orange.
