Hello Fellow Fruit Munchers!!
Love that term, it just makes me smile :) Anyway....
I was reading a post recently and it was suggested that a member not attempt running/jogging because they were 20/30 kilos heavy. It makes me wonder if I should be attempting this kind of exercise?! I am about 5'7" and (weighed myself after eating 1.5lbs of fruit) weigh 160lbs +!
What is everyones opinion on this? I want to be smart about being active and not hurt my body while I am carrying so much extra poundage. I have NO problem holding off on this and could easily do something else but I enjoy getting outside. I can always just walk briskly until I have lost the weight or have the money to buy a bike :) My BF just got one and I am sooooo jealous.
Cheers!
And Fruit On!!

Permalink Reply by DesertFox on May 13, 2012 at 4:25pm Try hiking, 160lbs is not a lot of extra weight for someone who is 5'7. I have carried a 70 lbs pack before for 20 miles at a brisk pace without injury. Many people who back pack carry heavy loads for long distances. I know a few hundred to a thousand people that wear an extra 50lbs of gear daily. Don't look for excuses or reasons not to exercise just get out there and do it!
Permalink Reply by Jessie James on May 18, 2012 at 11:11am Lol, you sound just like my BF! Sadly, I am going to wait on the running. I am in really bad shape and decided to walk until something changes. I did three miles the other day and it took a lot. I also played frisbee with the BF for about 30 min. I was so sore the next day, pretty sad! I'm going to take it slow and build from there. I have injured myself in the past and the recovery takes too long.
I started running a few weeks ago with my 30 lb 'backpack' and already have an injury. But I LOVE running, even though this is the first time in my life (46 years old) I've ever done it. I am older than you (I'm assuming) and am more overweight, though. I think it was a mistake to start running but somehow my daily walks just turned into running - I have so much energy. But I'm going to wait now until I've shed all the unecessary weight and start again. Until then, as Harley suggests, I'm going to start cycling. I found a second hand bike and it's in the shop. Also do strength training and walking, etc.
Running I think is hard on your body because of the high impact on joints already laden with extra weight.
Permalink Reply by Jessie James on May 18, 2012 at 11:10am I am going to walk until I can attempt it without worry. I have a bad lower back and injured it a while back trying to keep up with my sister. She can run double what I can. I could not move for 3 days. Better slow than sorry.
Permalink Reply by Jonathan Brose on May 19, 2012 at 12:33am I started training almost 3 months ago for my first 5k and my mile time was 15 minutes. During my training I did injure myself so I was only able to run a few times within a 2 month period before the race. What helped me the most was a few days before the race I got proper running shoes that fit my feet and my arch. Night and day comparison between my old running shoes and the new ones. I did the 5k and almost got to my goal of 30 minutes (32:24). But for me being 210lbs and 5'11", I didn't think it was that bad since 2 months prior, I was running 2 miles at around that time. A month later, I am down to 200lbs and can run 2 miles in 18 minutes.
I picked up cycling 2 weeks ago and I wish I had started doing this first! I want to train for a triathlon in a few months so I am also swimming. I prefer swimming and cycling over running because I can do them for a much longer period of time than running. I did my first 20 mile ride the other day and all I can think about is doing it again and again. I have never felt so refreshed after working out for 1.5 hours. After 20 minutes of running all I want to do is fall over. Usually, I end up going for a run after I bike because I have a lot of energy left over.
