I have a friend who was asking to get info on the raw food diet. I sent her articles and links and she has the nerve to send me an article from yahoo this morning about how to stay away from certain diets including a raw food diet. Shes a very intelligent woman and is a personal trainer in training and is in law school! How she could send me this article is insane! I don't know whether to laugh or scream! here's the link: http://shine.yahoo.com/healthy-living/4-celeb-diets-avoid-164900197... Tell me how you feel about this article!

Permalink Reply by Kenntacular on March 6, 2012 at 10:27am The fact that she says dairy is missing in every diet is ridiculous. We had to get our calcium from other sources before someone had the dumb idea of drinking the milk of another animal...
IMHO, it really seems like she is comparing each diet to a textbook diet she was probably taught in school.
Permalink Reply by Ashley Christensen <3 on March 6, 2012 at 10:48am It definitely is, sadly, I'm taking these courses soon.. but only to become part of the "institution" so I can say, yes I did learn all that BULLS*** :D and it's simply not true :D ONLY THEN will they think of the idea.... OMG! Maybe I should think for myself sometimes!!!! :D
Permalink Reply by Zannah Banana on March 6, 2012 at 10:59am I just want to say my friend did not write this article. However I feel she asked me just to have a debate cause she thinks she knows it all and wants to be right! And I can't believe she sends me this p.o.s article which clearly is wrong!! I love the part where it says some raw foodist eat raw fish and meats! Gross and I sure as s*** don't! how about lots of western diets that eat sushi and under cooked meat, so I'm confused as to why this statement is suppose to be a disclaimer when majority of the people I know and argue against HCRV life style eat this! And as for not having enough vitamin D or B-12 to ward off cancers and sickness as if those vitamins in foods are the only beneficial cure all in foods. I told her dig deeper in her research and not throw in the towel off of the 1st article that popped up on yahoo! and to learn and than speak from experience and make your own informed decision.

Permalink Reply by Ashley Christensen <3 on March 6, 2012 at 10:44am A) You're not eating raw meat and milk that's disgusting and obviously unhealthy so that eliminates 1 of 3 "downsides" to the diet as they claim
B) Second downside is lack of b12, but we all know meat eaters as well as vegans are mostly all deficient in b12, absorption of b12 is lacking and it's really our own fault for not supplementing so, get a few b12 injections and you're golden
C) Third "downside" to raw is you don't get vitamin D. Well whichever genius wrote this article is forgetting the biggest life-giving energy source that keeps all of us, plant, and animal life alive on this planet, plus a nice tan ---- the SUN :D .... The only way our body can absorb vitamin D (we call it a vitamin and associate it with being a nutrient from food of some sort, but it's just an essential piece of energy that we only receive and absorb from the sun)
There you go, counter argument *(EASY)* for every "point" in that article.
Permalink Reply by Zannah Banana on March 6, 2012 at 11:28am Ashley you rock! I'm totally taking your answer and messaging it to her as if I wrote it so I can sound as smart as you! ;p and good luck w school!
Permalink Reply by Zannah Banana on March 9, 2012 at 11:50pm This is what I recived back from the counterargue from my views and your counter arguement Ashley.
I could rip that entire video to shreds. And her whole argument is "I have a flat belly." Smh.
And I could also go point for point for everything else you have sent me. It may be good for a cleanse but for 98% of people, it wouldn't work as a way of life.
OK I don't have time to counterargue your points. You can believe what you want but my nutrition background is medically based and our bodies NEED protein and NEED fats.... I am not a cronie who believes what I see on the internet because it worked for one person or for a celebrity. I am too practical for that... I do my own research and I know that I am right.... anyhow if you don't get them, you will become vitamin deficient, your chances for bone disease and osteoporosis greatly increase, and your body could start using its own protein to rebuild its cells... which is what protein does. Hayley Salandy did the whole only fruits and veggies thing, lost a lot of weight, and then her body became toxic and she ended up in the hospital because her body was using its own protein to try to rebuild itself. She gained all that weight back. We can talk about this when I see ya because I don't have time to go back and forth. It is a medical fact that our bodies need proteins and fats. Food doesn't just sit in our intestines and putrify, it's physiologically impossible unless you have a blockage that needs to be surgically removed... or you are severely constipated. Anyway, talk to you about this when I see you. This would be a good cleanse but as far as a lifestyle, it won't work.
Permalink Reply by Jon Fergus on March 10, 2012 at 6:29am Hahahaha.... gotta love the know-it-all nutritionists. There a dime-a-dozen.
Unfortunately your friend is just another casualty of the misinformation of standard nutrition schools. Wait 20 years, and when she's managing her dietary diseases and you're thriving, remind her of this discussion. ;)
Did you mention that we do eat fat and protein which is found in plant sources? She sounds like our diet excludes all protein and fat.
And the comment "I know I am right" usually comes from someone who is really afraid of being wrong.
Permalink Reply by HolisticHealthDetective on March 10, 2012 at 12:51am I have a comment about the actual article. It was written by a woman named Brierley Wright, M.S., R.D and if you looked at the responses to the article, EVERYONE took exception to it. She had Paelos and raw foodists and nutritionists attacking her from all sides. So I looked her up and saw she had written another article entitled "Is Mercury in Fish as Harmful as You Thought?
Our dear author is working for some vested interests, and for having such a long list of touted credentials everywhere online, her e-mail address is conspicuously absent.
I'm sorry your friend trusts the propaganda article when no one else who read it does, apparently. She said "I do my own research and I know I am right." Well, that is an unfortunate mindset, too. I'm a holistic health guide and if I didn't equip myself with the capacity to rethink what I've learned, I'd be guiding people to go from hamburgers to soy burgers, like I did 13 years ago. Or recommending smoothies that mix fruit and fat.
Your friend also said "Food doesn't just sit in our intestines and putrify, it's physiologically impossible" which sounds like opinion stated as fact because I have to say I've never actually come across that argument line anywhere, ever. For her purposes, she should start with a solid book like Diet For a New America. John Robbins provides sources backing stats about that, such as that the average person on a SAD diet dies with about 5 lbs of undigested meat.
Furthermore, your friend initially wanted you to share with her about raw foods, but it seems her goal is actually to prove you wrong. What she is choosing not to see is that low-fat raw does work very, very well for what is a rapidly growing number of people who are coming on board, healing our bodies and sustaining it!
Everyone's a "nutritionist." I am still so amazed at the number of people who try to lecture at me about pop culture magazine fare nutrition, as if holistc eating and living isn't one of the first things that they know about me. Sorry, my friends, but if you eat pork, your nutrition info as about as useful to me as a microwave.
My in-laws are a lot like this. And it's usually in one ear and out the other. However, they are the ones who are struggling, lost in a void of conflicted mainstream advice! Not me.
Next time you chat with your friend, maybe you can just wish her a quiet "best of luck" on her food journey, done with a smile, and delight in your next sweet pineapple. That's what I do! Might as well have your side be the sweet and juicy one!

Permalink Reply by Zannah Banana on March 10, 2012 at 4:52am Thankyou! I'm keeping my mouth shut until people can see a difference in my body and over all health. I just hope I can do this. Today is a struggle, not for meat but something warm seems to be calling me.So I just keep stuffing my face w veggies and fruit!
Permalink Reply by HolisticHealthDetective on March 10, 2012 at 5:01am Ha, I know what you mean! When my family has pizza night, I eat bananas and dates and water and just get through it until I eventually brush my teeth and go to bed.
I always wake up the next morning glad for the choice I made, and glad I got through it and glad the feeling of wanting something else passed as well. Result: I feel lighter and happy to kick off the day with water and fresh fruit.
One distinction about our struggles is it's not about confusion over what to eat. That part feels clear. Just eating enough is key. = )
