Permalink Reply by DURIANRIDER on June 6, 2012 at 8:38am Move to Thailand and live on 100 a week lol! Average income in Thailand is 10USD a day so if you live on 100USD a week you will be twice above the base income line! ;)
Easy to do that in the rural fruit growing places of Thailand like Chanthaburi/Trat.
Those nam dok mai mangoes are about 50c-1USD per kg in Chanthaburi year round.
Look how organic these look. I took this photo and ate these mangoes. Most consistent mango in the world IMHO.
Permalink Reply by Sam on June 6, 2012 at 8:36pm They look much bigger over there too! I will be visiting in a few months :)
I guess if that's the average Thai income they could only afford two mangos per week over here in England!
I guess I would have at least 10 for a meal so that would be £25 ($40USD) for ONE MEAL!
And if you think that's mental then a meal of cherries from Tesco would cost over double that at a mere bargain price of £24.95 ($39 USD) PER KG!

Ugh I miss Thailand, have to wait till I get this degree to get a decent pay over there.Stuck here in Ireland where fruit taste so bland.
Permalink Reply by Sam on June 15, 2012 at 9:13pm Also the 'Tesco finest tree ripened mango' has dropped from £2.50 to £2 (tastes excellent). I don't mind paying a bit more as an incentive for farmers to stop chopping down immature and inferior fruit.
I don't have Tesco local to me but when I visited my mother in Cornwall for a week they had organic mangoes reduced to £1, I bought 4 or 5 and they were OK but ripened funny and remained hard close to the skin while soft in the centre, I went back again for a load up to take home of dates and bananas and bought another 1 which looked different and slightly larger which was the best mango i'd ever tasted, kicked myslef I didn't buy more ... I have Waitrose as my local supermarket and their fruit is nicer if not slightly more expensive. I also have an option of ordering a Tesco delivery any time but that means the produce being chosen for you.
Permalink Reply by Sam on June 15, 2012 at 10:31pm Yeh those organic mangos have slowly been getting worse over the last few years. I know when they drop to £1 is is the high season but they can still be poor. I make a habit now of keeping all my receipts and taking back EVERY piece of fruit im not happy with even when i have cut open or bitten in. i figure this is the only way they will keep sending feedback to the suppliers and things will change. sometimes customer service think i am being fussy but i wont be made to feel bad if they are selling me unripe fruit especially if i have a few boxes full. i would guess 99% or more people buy 1 or 2 mangos and chuck them if they are sour/bland without seeking refund, thats why supermarkets keep churning out this crap. i encourage everyone to return bad fruit and insist feedback is send. happy monching :)
The problem is that they keep them in refrigeration. I worked in a high class fruit and veg shop in Chelsea for most of the 90's and our mangos and papayas and pineapples were never put in the fridge. When a customer came back with a complaint with them the first question we asked was did you put it in the fridge, 9 times out of 10 they did.
Permalink Reply by Sam on June 15, 2012 at 11:21pm Arrgggg they should have stickers on saying only fridge me once ripe (for all fruit)
I meant the supermarkets keep them in refrigeration, most of the time the damage had been done before the customer takes the produce home, in Waitrose all their mangos, papayas and pineapples are in chiller cabinets.
Permalink Reply by Sam on June 16, 2012 at 12:25am oh i see u used to supply some of the supermarkets. got ya
no, I used to work in a small family run business, tiny shop floor but numerous staff .. used to have many wealthy and famous customers (photo taken outside of it on my profile).
The produce is kept chilled on the shop floor in Waitrose and the mangos are cold when you pick them up, in the Tesco I went to in Cornwall the mangos weren't on display in chillers but in storage in the back and for transportation i'm sure they are chilled ... but like you said 99% of customers would throw them out and if it happened too often they would just not buy the fruit .
Permalink Reply by Sam on June 16, 2012 at 3:12am yep its a sad fact i see it all the time too, but I was referring to your customer complaints, it seems some people need instructions stuck on their fruit maybe? lol
