For many years now I have had a sun sensitivity. It seems to be getting worse the older I get. What happens is that with a little bit of sun exposure my skin breaks out it red itchy bumps. Sometimes it's more like red itchy splotches over a large area. Strange that it changes, I know. My Dad has the same issue, it used to be splotchy for him but now it's bumps, and each bump is like somebody is holding a lit cigarette to his skin when the sun touches it. The worst for me is my skalp and the tops of my ears (they get all swollen, itchy, burning etc). A few years ago as I was walking home from work (a 15 minute walk) in shorts, my legs got swollen and bumpy and by the time I got home they were blistering.
Living in Canada, often the sky is clouded over most of the winter. Sometimes if I get enough sun in the first few weeks of summer I build up a "tolerance" to it, and sometimes it comes back quite randomly. Lately, any bit of sunshine causes me grief.
Has anybody experienced this? I've been living with it for 20 years now and don't want to live with it anymore.
Has anybody cured it with a raw diet? When the sun touches my skalp, it's like thousands of mosquito bites are all over my head. My toes swell. The whole bit. Anywhere the sun has touched (so lines on my feet from wearing sandals don't puff up and get itchy). Though it can spread. Ugh.

Permalink Reply by Happy Raw Vegan on April 15, 2012 at 3:22am My mom gets this! Hers are huge and look like smaller boils, about the size of dimes. She would never try a vegetarian diet much less a raw vegan one so I have no idea if this would clear up with a proper diet. I do know that a good diet could not hurt you in this regard. They do say that this diet helps you with sun exposure and burning, although I have yet to see this effect on me. I have extremely fair skin and have always burned with the slightest sun exposure. I hope that you find relief. You will have to update us with your results as the summer comes and your body gets cleaner.
Thanks! I'm glad the bumps I get aren't that big, instead it's like mini mosquito bites.
What part of the world are you and your Mom in? Growing up, my friends never really understood - it doesn't seem to be a very common condition.
Permalink Reply by Happy Raw Vegan on April 15, 2012 at 4:13pm We live in Wyoming (USA), she lives on one side of the state and I live on the other. My mom has had this for as long as I can remember, but has been very careful in the sun. I have never heard of anybody else that had this condition either so I didn't understand it either. I just know that she always wears a hat and stays out of the sun as much as possible.

I would think (?) .. maybe this is some kind of allergic/somewhat of an autoimmune condition based on other toxins existing in the body.
I'm no doctor or nutritionist, but I know my own autoimmune issues are due to 1) heavy metal toxicity and, because of 1), I am 2) very sensitive to certain foods - gluten, casein (dairy), preservatives, sulfites, caramel color, artificial colors, etc.
Also, on the movie, Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead (free on Amazon to Prime customers), the creator of the movie has a skin condition that completely resolves itself when he goes on a 'juice fast' for days. Actually, he meets another man with the same debilitating condition and the second man's condition goes away after doing the juice fasting and healthy eating, too.
Permalink Reply by Suzanne Meredith on April 15, 2012 at 3:05pm I used to have this and didn't know anybody else who had it. I guess it first started when I was 12/13(I'm almost 20 now). It was so bad then that when I went to the beach my legs, arms, and chest were *covered* in bumps (there was more red than the white of my skin). I'd wear an SPF 70 just to help... I realize that was bad now, although after a year it fortunately went significantly down. I still get it, but only a few bumps on my chest and legs, so nothing major. I honestly have no clue how the diet would affect you from personal experience, since my issue gradually went away with time and no real dietary change (at the time atleast), but I imagine going raw would take care of the problem as it's my guess that the skin was just bringing toxins up from the surface. Also, since for me the excessive spf helped lessen the symptoms, I'm assuming that more UVA/UVB rays were being prevented from hitting the skin and bringing those toxins up.

Permalink Reply by Sanazberries on April 15, 2012 at 4:00pm IS THERE ANY 'NATURAL' TYPE OF SUNSCREEN WE CAN USE, OR MAKE. AND DOES ANYBODY RECOMMEND A CERTAIN SUNSCREEN?
Because I think I'm rather sensitive. I have already burned and peeled this year. I am still peeling from the burn i got two weeks ago. -_-
Permalink Reply by Happy Raw Vegan on April 15, 2012 at 4:23pm You want to know something about burns that scares me now? I got burned on my chest so bad that it hurt for 2 weeks. Now I have a condition that makes me flush red in a tank top shape across my chest, wine, exercise, simply getting too warm will do it too. The dermatologist says that any amount of sun will make it worse. (but I am not sure about this as he also wants me to slather lots of SPF all over me and avoid the sun all the time because it causes skin cancer) I also have small, red, broken capillaries like the nose of a life long drinker all over it. Now I am afraid of getting the amount of sun because I am also so very fair skinned. I have ruined my complexion. I want to tan to get my vit. D, but eek! I burn every time I enter the sun no matter how much raw food that I eat or how carefully or slowly I tan. (You can see all of the veins under my skin, yuck!) A tan would help hide these. I am so torn!!!
Permalink Reply by Dante on April 17, 2012 at 10:21pm People here may be discussing 2 separate but related issues. I myself have experienced what I believe is "uticaria", a reaction to sun in which you break out in some itchy hives. However, I noticed that after some time on 811 and regular sun exposure, it stopped. Perhaps one day with the sun and then with continued exposure and good diet, it's gone. I've lived in sub-tropics with sun everyday and had no ill effects. Also, as a very fair skinned person, who was burned as a child and had many many freckles for years, I know for a fact that the 811 diet and all the fruit, veggies, juice, etc I consumed changed my bodies resistance and reaction to sun. Only after extended times in peak hours of the day did I burn (in the ocean was the last time I remember, so the salt may have played a role too).
If you research, just as with skin cancer, you will find the physiological and pharmacological metabolism of the body is greatly affected by diet and toxic load, so it should be no surprise that the skin will react differently and the body will have greater resistance to being burned by UV. Just as toxins in the skin will help cause cancer, all of the circulating polyphenols, terpenoids, antioxidants, etc, will have their function, usually positive and protective, in the skin. Keep in mind the electromagnetic energy, UV in particular will break down compounds in the skin and lymph as the rays penetrate into the body, thus it shouldn't be surprising that people will break down what their bodies, usually after all other eliminative organs are already working overtime, have stored in the skin. These compounds will be broken down due to the electromagnetic energy but but also there are reactions that may take place chemically.
Short answer: good diet and as much as sun as you can safely handle should help if it's the same thing I experienced. To this day I don't have the freckles quite like I used to, I don't burn all that easily, and this reaction goes away within a few days of regular sun exposure again. I believe as I said above, that this is an interplay between the sun and compounds in the skin, if not a function of the skin itself adjusting.
