This is currently going around the rescue world here. North Carolina kind of sucks when it comes to any form of animal welfare, so every little bit helps.

And for anyone who lives in NC, you can call also and leave this message or something similar:
“My name is ___ ____ I am a North Carolina citizen. I am calling to ask that you please support a reasonable and responsible bill to regulate commercial dog breeders in NC. Let’s get this done during short session once and for all. Commercial dog breeders should be accountable for the dogs they breed and pay taxes like all other NC businesses. Our current laws are not sufficient to protect these animals from unscrupulous breeders that we call “puppy mills”.

Permalink Reply by TryxNova on April 5, 2012 at 6:16pm I can't stand it.. I hate seeing bought pets and puppy/kitten mills and backyard breeders. My step-dad has a bought Bulldog from an NC puppy mill who is really just terrified of everything, and my step-dad wants to breed him. :( I am ashamed of my family more often than not.
I do think that rescuing is useful, though, (until it is not needed anymore) and have three rescues myself - two cats and a dog.. but I will never buy any pet. I give a home to unwanted pets for the sole purpose of giving them a safe place to live out their lives... not because they are "so cute!" or whatever. A lot of shelters in NC are high-kill and have conditions just as bad as puppy mills, and a few even still use gas chambers and the heart stick method to euthanize. I recently rescued and adopted out a dog from one of these that is an hour away from me, and I wouldn't wish those conditions that I saw on anyone for any period of time. So when I can offer room & board or a permanent home, I do. I just wish I had more room to offer sometimes..
