I havn't been 100% hcrv over the last few years (maybe 50%) (so i was probably eating a "balanced diet" haha) but yeah I have no cavities, my teeth are fairly clean, just a slight yellowing and a couple of black lines in the pits of a couple teeth... those grooves on the top of the bottom teeth. i thought maybe they were the beginnings of some cavities but apparently they are harmless stains from tea or coffee, which makes sense coz i was drinking alot of black tea a couple years ago when they appeared. i havn't been to the dentist for 9 years.
there was a book in the dentists office called "sweet poison, why sugar makes you fat", if i recall correctly it was the only book in his office... so i made quite a few remarks about the massive quantities of fruits I eat, and he was sort of like well that's no problem, its just the acidic fruits, and also he said i could get away with not brushing my teeth coz i was young, so yeah sometimes i don't brush em for 3 or 4 days, sometimes longer.
all in all a fun time. i was a bit shocked about his reply to my comment on raw meat causing tooth decay, he said that eating raw meat would not cause tooth decay... i said there's uric acid in meat, i forgot about the phosphoric acid. HE said there is not much uric acid in meat. WHATEVER. his teeth looked terrible. HAHA

Permalink Reply by eventhorizon on April 13, 2012 at 6:16pm when i said i ate massive amounts of fruit he took longer than normal to reply, and normally i think he would have said that doing that is wrong, but it was obvious i had no ill effects from it, so he went along with it to an extent. he was very defensive about meat though.
Permalink Reply by Happy Raw Vegan on April 13, 2012 at 10:35pm You will find that food is as much a religion as Christianity or Islam. People will defend their beliefs to the end of the earth. Only sometimes diet can be changed when health and death are staring, so perhaps diet is NOT quite as strong.
Permalink Reply by HolisticHealthDetective on April 13, 2012 at 11:58pm That's interesting, the religion comparison---even when the tables are turned. I know people view me being strict vegan and raising my girls vegan as like a "vegan religion" for me. My partner has said as much anyway. I don't preach it but we thoroughly live it. My in-laws are extremely religious, and they think I'm dogmatic (even though I have never tried to sell vegetarianism to them but they are hungry for my conversion). Sometimes I've been tempted to tell them to back off with their suggestions to offer foods I don't like to my girls, that I feel as strongly about it as they do their religion. But then I don't actually say it. For one, it's not exactly true, since being vegan doesn't require faith and I don't worship vegan deities. And also it may offend them, which I don't want either. = ) But in some ways there are similarities: it's an ethical belief I refuse to compromise, and it's the standard by which I eat, as since I do revere the human body and what goes into it, I can't imagine the scenario that would entice me to eat animals. I made a creed to love animals and not eat them, and creeds are often religious. And being an exclusive plant-eater is a core part of my world-view. I don't know what that has to do with the dentist, though! Just wondered about the religion take from the other side, as it were. = )
Permalink Reply by Happy Raw Vegan on April 14, 2012 at 10:42am Great post, HHD! It is just that I have noticed through personal observation and posts here that people will defend eating meat with the same gusto as they do their own religion.
Perhaps they are quicker to say something about diet as it may be considered a faux pas to offer your opinion of religion but is entirely OK to tell someone that they are wrong about the way that they eat and why. I don't really understand that. However, most vegans are considered "preachy", but it seems that they are like you and mostly want to just be left to their own devices. Meat eaters are the fastest (and loudest) to point out why you are WRONG.
I guess that I see this as close to religion as I live in a very preachy area where they often point out that their beliefs are the one and only and they insinuate that mine are wrong. It may just be a touchy subject. I can't imagine what they would think if they knew that I was a vegan!!! I am already looked upon as crazy for not eating meat! My mom thinks that I am killing myself because I dropped dairy. LOL. =)
I wish you luck in your endeavors with your in-laws. I would be pretty upset if they kept offering my children foods that they KNEW I did not want. Wait! My mom does this. She feeds my lactose INTOLERANT child dairy all the time. Poor little thing. My mom takes the kids out for ice cream and I have to stay up all night with a sick kid. I hope that all will turn out for you and for my family as well. =)
