I've been vegan for a year (vegetarian for 13 years before that) and progressing to a high carb raw vegan with most of my diet consisting of raw fruits and veggies for the past 3 months.
Anyway, the past two weeks I've been really nauseous (almost all the time but most in the morning, not pregnant) and having bad diarrhea multiple times a day, which is really interfering with my life. I have hardly any appetite and basically only eat bananas and white rice, some crackers. I tried drinking coconut water to keep hydrated but it made my nausea worse, so I've been drinking pedialite because I don't know what else to do. And I still feel week and dehydrated.
I finally gave in last Thursday and went to a doctor. Partly because I was tired of feeling so ill and not knowing whats up and partly because my boss said that if i was calling out I would need a doctors note. Some blood test and a few hundred dollars later the doc decided it was, "IBS brought on by stress" and to take kaopectate, Imodium, etc.
...ok, so now what? Some of the stresses in my life aren't going any ware and I've even made peace with some of them. I'm a dog walker so at lest I have a really low stress job... for the most part. It's stressful to work now because I'm not near a bathroom most of the time. But it does force me to get out and move around even though I feel like crap, so I think that's good.
I've tried things like ginger and peppermint to settle my stomach with little to no luck. taking something like kaopectate seems to help with the lower end issues a little.... but that doesn't fix the problem from the source.
Anyway if anyone can suggest any ideas about whats up with my belly or anything that might help fix the problem I will be so grateful! I miss my morning runs and afternoons of sitting in the sun, eating watermelon and just relaxing.
Please help!!!

Permalink Reply by Black Zapote on June 11, 2012 at 4:07am No I don't track my food, though I'm seriously considering it now. I haven't really had much change in my diet before I got sick though. So I'm not sure how that would have triggered it? I do use salt every once and awhile. I aim for 80/10/10 but as I said I'm not currently tracking what I eat and I do eat avocados more often then i probably should. So my fat intake was probably above 10% . With only eating rice (2 cups) and bananas (as many as I can stomach) the past 2 weeks my fat intake is probably really low.

Please track and please eat organic or locally grown by people you know for sure are not using pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, etc., Or simply grow your own.
Find a way to treat your body with respect and honor its pure food needs. Your emotions, mind, and all else will improve.

Permalink Reply by molly clare on June 12, 2012 at 12:37pm watermelon, as delicious as it is, is a diuretic! try honeydew or cantelope once you feel less nauseated...i still eat watermelon from time to time, but knowing that it is actually not a hydrating fruit and removes sodium from your body as well...is important to keep in mind!
Permalink Reply by Rebecca A M Curci on June 11, 2012 at 5:17am I started out with diarrhea that would not go away and then the tiredness kicked in. The doctors told me I had IBS but what I really have is Crohn's.... IBS is the doctors way of saying I have no idea what is wrong with you so I am going to give you this label because I have nothing else... either way you should read a book called Self healing Colitis & Crohn's by David Klien. It should help you even if you only have IBS.
I do yoga or meditate to keep myself calm and not stressed.
Have you tried water fasting for a few days (like 2-4days make sure you rest most of the day) it might help too. I water fast like once every other week or so for a day just to keep me cleaned out.
You should also sleep as much as possible...when you get off work go lay down and rest I agree do not read watch tv or do anything else at least for a few days.
I would not take any pills or herbs your body is trying to remove something and stopping it it a very bad idea to me. I agree about the pooping possition. That helped me a lot by pooping in the right possition. I would drink LOTS of water too if you are having the runs...
And deffinetly track what you are eating I use Cronometer.com and that way you can look back and make sure you are not over or under eating anything. But I would really water fast or juice and water fast. If you have a juicer I would juice celery and apple and drink at least a few heads of celery with a few apple... the celery will keep you form becoming dehydrated.
Permalink Reply by Peter Csere on June 12, 2012 at 12:22am Thank you for adopting the terminology, "pooping position;" I lol'd. But also, thanks for mentioning it - it is a weird topic for many people so it may help for her to hear it from someone else with "random misdiagnosed my medical degree is completely useless bowel-itis".
Permalink Reply by Rebecca A M Curci on June 12, 2012 at 7:54am I misspelled that part out of all things lol. I know it is a subject most people avoid but we are really trained wrong as childen when it comes to going to the bathroom and it can create problems as adults. I used to never talk about stuff that happend in the bathroom lol but now I just want to help other people before they get as bad as I did. I hope it helps her.
I am now of opinion that a lot of the so called well educated doctors have no clue what they are talking about. I even flat out asked my GI doctor (he is the leading one for my area) what he knew about how the food I ate was affecting me and he said "food is not affecting me or condition as long as you stay away from alcohol, spicy and fried foods" and that was it.
Permalink Reply by Peter Csere on June 12, 2012 at 11:58am Oh, yes. I routinely hear stories of cancer patients telling their doctors that they've been improving their diets and trying to exercise - and the doctors laughing and saying "That won't make a bit of difference."
I wonder what your doctor's reaction would be if you told him about the squatting XD he would be out of a job if people knew about that.
Permalink Reply by Joel Moody on June 12, 2012 at 2:00pm Maybe try proper food combination? That always works for me when I'm having loose stool. Also, some veggies might help. Maybe not all fruits, cause too much of one thing can be bad for the body. If you are just eating bananas and white rice, that means no fat either.. you need at least 3-4% fat intake from foods a day for a healthy body. Good healthy sources of low fat foods include tomatoes, romaine and various other greens.
You might be eating too much sugar, and your body just isn't digesting, that can happen to some fruitiarians. I've been there, nothing stays in, and then I started to focus on veggies, just as many veggies as fruit. Mostly greens, green beans, lettuce, celery, spinach, collards, kale... Sprouts are also really good, cucumbers can also be a laxative, so you might wanna stay away from those.....
