I've been vegan for a year (vegetarian for 13 years before that) and progressing to a high carb raw vegan with most of my diet consisting of raw fruits and veggies for the past 3 months.
Anyway, the past two weeks I've been really nauseous (almost all the time but most in the morning, not pregnant) and having bad diarrhea multiple times a day, which is really interfering with my life. I have hardly any appetite and basically only eat bananas and white rice, some crackers. I tried drinking coconut water to keep hydrated but it made my nausea worse, so I've been drinking pedialite because I don't know what else to do. And I still feel week and dehydrated.
I finally gave in last Thursday and went to a doctor. Partly because I was tired of feeling so ill and not knowing whats up and partly because my boss said that if i was calling out I would need a doctors note. Some blood test and a few hundred dollars later the doc decided it was, "IBS brought on by stress" and to take kaopectate, Imodium, etc.
...ok, so now what? Some of the stresses in my life aren't going any ware and I've even made peace with some of them. I'm a dog walker so at lest I have a really low stress job... for the most part. It's stressful to work now because I'm not near a bathroom most of the time. But it does force me to get out and move around even though I feel like crap, so I think that's good.
I've tried things like ginger and peppermint to settle my stomach with little to no luck. taking something like kaopectate seems to help with the lower end issues a little.... but that doesn't fix the problem from the source.
Anyway if anyone can suggest any ideas about whats up with my belly or anything that might help fix the problem I will be so grateful! I miss my morning runs and afternoons of sitting in the sun, eating watermelon and just relaxing.
Please help!!!

Really sorry you've been feeling so rough recently :(
Have you tried eating grapes? These are great for rebalancing your body when you've been ill, and digest really easily too. Just make sure they are really sweet or they'll hurt your stomach.
Hope this helps,
Esperanza xxx
Permalink Reply by Black Zapote on June 11, 2012 at 1:56am No, I haven't had grapes since I started feeling sick. But I'm willing to give them a try. Do you think it matters if there green, red, or black? The Black grapes are my favorite... and the hardest to find lol.
Permalink Reply by Esperanza Vite - The Raw Monkey on June 11, 2012 at 2:39am I like the green seedless ones best, but that's just personal preference, so really I'd just go for which ever are your favorites. Don't eat the seeds, and peel them to start with if the skin is tough, as that'll make them easier on your stomach. And if you can then go for organic :) Take care, Esperanza xxx

Permalink Reply by Peter Csere on June 11, 2012 at 2:00am Well if you have irritable bowel syndrome, obviously you need to cure it. And the only way to cure irritable bowel syndrome is to remove its most basic cause; incorrect pooping posture. Starting today; feet on the seat not on the floor. (No need to buy a fancy stool.)
That page explains (heavily cited and sourced) the source of the problem so you can fix it. Because who wants to throw pills and herbs at symptoms and hope they go away, right? Not you. The chart all the way at the bottom is very persuasive.
You never explained why you aren't drinking water to stay hydrated. Coconut water is expensive and pedialyte (I don't really know what that is, but) is probably full of chemicals that will make your problems worse. Drink pure water as if your life depended on it (it does).
Why white rice? That is the same as eating pure sugar. At least the banana has fiber in it. If you must eat rice, eat brown rice. That probably has very little to do with your issues, but the insoluble fiber in rice will irritate your duodenum and bowels even more so stick with the fruit for now.
Permalink Reply by Black Zapote on June 11, 2012 at 2:31am Oh, regular water seems to make me more nauseous as well. I've tried it cold, warm, room temp... it just doesn't go down well and then it feels like it's slashing around in my stomach. I do have sips here and there but not enough to stay hydrated. And yeah pedialyte is probably not the best thing for me. It's: "Water, Dextrose. Less than 2% of the Following: Citric Acid, Sodium Chloride, Sodium Carboxymethylcellulose, Potassium Citrate, Potassium Sorbate, Sodium Benzoate, Sucralose, Acesulfame Potassium, and Natural & Artificial Fruit Flavors" wtf?
White rice because i find it easier on my stomach then the brown. Rice has also been the only thing that hasn't made me gag to eat if I'm really nauseous. I want to get on a mono banana diet until I'm feeling better but it just doesn't seem to be working out.
Permalink Reply by Peter Csere on June 12, 2012 at 12:14am Ah, that makes sense about the rice.
So the water makes you nauseous, but the pedialyte you are probably able to "stomach'' simply because of the taste. But all that stuff is nasty. Some of those ingredients are made from GMO corn and I'm pretty sure sucralose is a carcinogen.
Where do you get your water from? City water tower? Well? Is is filtered or distilled?
Def. do it at room temp because it will be closer to the temp. of your stomach. For now, you may just have to force it in because staying hydrated is of the utmost importance.
Hey, sometimes drinking through a straw makes all the difference.

Permalink Reply by Peter Csere on June 12, 2012 at 12:12am The balance is a little weird at first so it helps to hold on to something like a nearby counter until you develop better balance. Also, make sure the seat is down. Eventually, it won't feel as weird, and you will notice that evacuation is cleaner and more complete. And easier.
Note that in many parts of Asia toilets are built on the floor for squatting. They look something like horizontal floor-mounted urinals. When they come here they are confused on how to use our weird toilets.

I would do something here that helps no matter what: BED REST!!!! TOTAL AND COMPLETE. No 'puter, no TV, no book reading, background soothing restful music is fine. BED REST! Your body is trying, in my opinion, to rid itself of something that you probably didn't know you ate. Your body needs it's full cooperation and that is BED REST.
As for what to eat...don't unless you are hungry. Suck on ice cubes for hydration if you must.
BTW: Are you using ORGANIC or commercial produce?? You might be in a position right now with the length of time you were doing vegan to clean up the quality of what you are eating. I believe honestly you got some strong crap thrown in as a secret bonus.
Now, vegan is like a sect of Christianity. When someone says Vegan I haven't a clue about the specifics of their program. So, please share exactly what you ate before the time you got sick.
Stress is always a part of life. Stress doesn't cause disease. Poor living habits do.
Permalink Reply by Black Zapote on June 11, 2012 at 2:57am Right before I get sick my diet was mostly consisted of; Bananas, watermelon, grapes, pears, romain lettuce, celery, beets, avocado, some rice, and maybe tofu... I can't remember if I had any tofu that week as I have been cutting it out of my diet. A mixture of organic and commercial produce.
Unfortunately my job doesn't allow for anytime off really (they even convinced me to go to work the rest of the day after I went to the doc and got my note for not going in) so getting bed rest would be a tough one. And I love my job, when I'm not sick, so I really don't want to loose it.
Permalink Reply by ORGANIC811LFRV on June 11, 2012 at 3:01am Go to bed as much as you can and get as much extra rest as you can off work hours. As to the description of what you ate, you are not tracking are you? Do so and I'd recommend Cron-o-meter. Start watching and logging exactly what you are eating. Yes, this takes effort. And, do your best to go all organic. Eliminate the rice and tofu. Soy is a GMO product. White rice is not for nutriton, it is for saving money and filling our stomachs. Are you using salt?, sugar? caffeine? or adding any kind of oils or fats to that rice and/or tofu? Are you 80/10/10? Do you do overt fats?
You see, it's all in the details my dear. And you need honestly to be more detailed.
