30 Bananas a Day!

REALLY BAD ACID REFLUX!!! PLEASE HELP!! FATHER DIED OF ESOPHAGEAL CANCER

Preliminary info: I have been on and off 80 10 10 for a few months now, but in the past 2 weeks I finally have truly committed to this lifestyle and feel it sticking for life. Over the past 2 weekscI have eaten high carb raw as well as cooked vegan. The only cooked items being steamed potatoes, broccoli, green peas, and spaghetti squash. I also use organic spices such as cumin, cinnamon, thyme, basil, turmeric, rosemary, and a little red pepper.

Issue at hand: My issue now is that my acid reflux has become HORRIBLE. The worst ever. I have had acid reflux for a few years now and take medicine for it. I take prevacid 30mg twice a day before my meals.

Since going 80 10 10 these past 2 weeks my throat is sooo sore, achey, and very swollen. As I learned from seeing various doctors, the sore throat is from the acid from my leachees stomach splashing up from my stomach and into my throat.

I eat fruit and veggie meals that are 500 calories in the afternoon and 1000 calories for dinner. I know that acid reflux can be caused by eating too much at one time, so do you think that is my issue? I tend to eat lots of high water content fruits such as cantaloupe, strawberries, grapes, and all together in 1 sitting.

Questions:

Could it be that the fruit is too acidic?

Is it the food combining since I am not mono mealing yet?

Am I eating too much in 1 sitting? I do eat at dinner to the point where I am uncomfortably full. My meal consists of 1000 calories always but it is very high volume fruits and I am usually tired after eating and very bloated.

Example of dinner meal: For example, for dinner tonight I had: 1 mango, 20 leachees, 27 grapes, 20 cherries, 1 ear raw sweet corn, 2 cups raw spinach, 10 grape tomatoes, 3 frozen bananas made into banana ice cream, and some cinnamon, cumin, basil, thyme for spices. Do you think my meals could be making this acid reflux problem happen.

**Though I eat an 1000 calorie dinner on 80 10 10 I have honestly been eating that many calories at my meals for a long time now before I even started this lifestyle. I used to eat lots of popcorn and soy chips that were high in volume for my stomach, so I am confused as to why now that I am eating 1000 calorie meals from fruits and veggies (which are much healthier) that my throat is being torn up by acid??

**Also, and this is really important as to why I am so concerned about my acid reflux...my beloved father died Dec 5, 2010, from esophageal cancer. I am scared that all my acid reflux is taking me down that same path since the acid could really hurt my esophagus lining and lead to cancer.

**If anyone knows anything about acid reflux and how it relates to my situation I would greatly appreciate your advice on what to do differently and some explanation of what is going on with me.

Thank you so much for your time and help!!

Prevacid is a proton pump inhibitor. It prevents the release of acid in the stomach and intestines. Prevacid taken long term drops B12 causes bone depletion and osteoporosis.

You need to head off the problem before it gets worse. Your gastroesophageal reflux needs to be minimized so you heal up. No caffeine, beer, alcohol coffee, peppermint, peppers, aspirin or nsaids. If you loose weight it will help.

The Prevacid is reducing your stomachs acid and preventing food from being digested properly so it's fermenting and gassing out (probably at night) causing gastroesophageal reflux and esophageal erosion.

A temporary fix is to raise the head of your bed 2-4 inches. This will help prevent the acid from reaching your esophagus. Buy some DGL Liquorice. This is extremely effective it rebuilding the protective mucus layer. DGL Liquorice increases mucous production and accelerate the healing of duodenal and gastric ulcers. It has also been proven effective in the treatment of chronic stomach discomfort and protect the stomach from NSAIDs (such as aspirin). Chew up 2 lozenges 2-3 times a day. It's Licorice so it's not poison. Real Licorice for the most part is not sold in the USA anymore and is just anise flavoring as Licorice raises blood pressure. To prevent that GDL or de-glycyrrhizinated Licorice has the blood pressure raising effects removed.

Getting off the Prevacid is going to save your health in the long run. No need to eat 1,000 calorie meals for now. Just eat until you're not hungry. If you need to eat 4-6 smaller meals thats ok. Don't eat 3 hours before bed time.

thank you so much for this information and advice. do you really think it is safe for me to go off the prevacid given my family history of esophageal cancer? trust me I don't like the idea of b12 drop, bone depletion, and osteoperosis, but i would take all of those over getting cancer. i was taking the prevacid thinking the positives of  the pill helping my esophagus would outway the negative effects. do you have an opinion on this? also, if i stop taking the pill what is going to stop my acid reflux from getting worse? should this diet naturally stop my acid reflux or could it be something that I will have no matter what? also, do you think that steamed broccoli/peas/spaghetti squash/potatoes will make my acid reflux worse and stop my healing process on this lifestyle?

If I were you I would stop taking the pills.  Usually acid reflux pills just prevent you body from making acid which makes digestion really difficult.  Plus it makes you body freak out and try making more acid which makes the problem worse.  Try sticking with mono meals for a while and then work your way back towards more complicated meals to see what works best for you.

Thank you for the advice! I want to go off the pills I am just scared my acid reflux will get worse, but it may be worth the try.

On Vegsource.com, Dr. D advised someone with severe heartburn to eat more greens, celery, and cucumbers. You might give this a try.

When I experienced severe acid reflux several years ago-it was sooo painful! And I really, really feel for you-my doctor and I tried everything. Nothing worked for a whole year. Then, it just magically disappeared for almost a year. And one day, I ate some peppermint and BANG! the acid reflux returned with a vengeance. Turned out I am just allergic to peppermint!!  Could yours be due to some allergy you're unaware of? Just a thought.

Good luck, sweetie, I can really feel for you!  ....ana xoxo

I mentioned peppermint in my post above.

Peppermint relaxes the muscle ( the one-way valve, called the lower esophageal sphincter - LES ) between the esophagus and stomach so your stomachs acid ends up in your esophagus and throat. Best to avoid it but it's probably not an allergic reaction.

Keep in mind as you do your meal planning that the simpler the meal is the better, faster, easier, and more completely it will digest. This applies to ALL meals including the ones that arn't fresh fruit. Good luck.

This is my favorite food combining chart :

Oh wow i was just dealing with this recently.. because this is a really difficult thing to deal with do yourself the favor and stay pure! Eat a lot of greens and up the banana calorie intake. And mono eating is so helpful so you can find the culprit, it could just be one thing
