It sure caused a bit of a stir.

I used that in a discussion that was taking place about a German Sheppard Rescue org. having a fund raiser and they would be using a barbacue event.

I basically told asked them

Not sure if it is a good idea to alleviate suffering for one type of animals and take part in the suffering of other animals.

It sure struck a nerve with a few ;-)

Oh my gosh, BigG, this is a powerful quote and the fact it's from a Cardinal is powerful too. It reminds of something I read in the awesome book, Committed. The author says that the lead singer for the Smiths told him that he always saw animals the same way he sees children, totally innocent and at at our mercy. I wish I had the exact quote.

There is something unique about quotes on animals and their rights that really moves me, I love reading them, thanks for sharing and starting this thread. :)

The following is a quote from an extensive audio interview of T. Colin Campbell which I decided to transcribe because it's really powerful:

I’ve become very much sensitive to the fact that eating animal based foods has a lot of consequences. And those consequences for the most part… [have] to do with the way some people mistreat other people, and the way they mistreat animals, the way they mistreat the environment. I call that… ‘global violence’. Why do we do that? Why do we do the things that are often not in our best interest? And violate the rights of others… whether it’s other sentient beings, or whether it’s abuse of the environment. It’s all the same. So I just see if we chose the right kind of foods we would be decreased in violence, end of story, full stop. It’s just the way it is.

and then he goes on to discuss studies done on changing prison inmates to a plant based diet and incidents of violence going down, which is pretty cool if not very surprising.
