I have love for the footless,
for the bipeds too I have love;
I have love for those with four feet,
for the many-footed I have love.

One should not kill a living being,
nor cause it to be killed,
nor should one incite another to kill.
Do not injure any being, either strong or weak, in the world.

Permalink Reply by ednshell on March 19, 2013 at 1:03pm A bit of light in the world... the new pope so many look to for guidance has chosen his papal name after Saint Francis Of Assisi. No pope has ever taken the name Francis.
“For me, he is the man of poverty, the man of peace, the man who loves and protects creation. These days we don’t have a very good relationship with creation, do we?” he said. “He is the man who gives us this spirit of peace, the poor man.” -Pope Francis on why he chose his papal name after Saint Francis of Assisi
“If you have men who will exclude any of God's creatures from the shelter of compassion and pity, you will have men who will deal likewise with their fellow men.”—Francis of Assisi
“Not to hurt our humble brethren is our first duty to them, but to stop there is not enough. We have a higher mission—to be of service to them wherever they require it.”—Francis of Assisi

both john and benedict tended to be supportive of animal issues.
the former apparently acknowledged that animals had souls while the latter even encouraged veg and appeared in a peta ad.
one would hope that a guy who choose the patron saint of animals would perform even better.
