30 Bananas a Day!

We are in the process of moving into an apartment. We know that the apartment folks treat for "pests". I found a sizeable cockroach carcass under the sink when I was putting away some of our gear. How do most of you folks handle roaches or at least minimize them in your living environment. I know that most of us have large quantities of fruit laying around to ripen and this just seems like it will be a buffet for the little guys.

GET SOME of that chalk u find in the mexican markets... outline your hole house and areas you dont want them near... where theres one roach, there are more....i find that the chalk works great... it creates a barrier they tend to not cross... and its like 3 for $1 at a swapmeet... hell ill buy you some if you cant find any lol

Catch em and throw em into smoothies! As we all know vegan diets are protein deficient (JK)

gorilla,

there is no need to kill them and thus demonstrate one's barbaric tendencies. nor should you throw them into smoothies since the beverage is no longer vegan.

the key to managing bugs is cleanliness, setting up barriers (interesting point by oscar about the chalk - we found that murphy's wood oil soap works well with ants), relocating them and diversion (for instance, keep a pile of fruit for them in a place of easy access.

you might also keep your fruit in large containers that the roaches can't breach - eg tupperware which you open up at sufficient intervals.

here are some other discussions about roaches that you may find helpful:

do it for the roaches..

YEAH Pradtf i suggested the chalk to make barriers, im not into killing so much as Myca (kidding) haha... the chalk works for ants and tons of other pests as well...

it's a great idea, oscar! i didn't know about chalk being effective - better than cayenne powder! i just found out that chalk can sometimes be used as an insecticide, so it is understandable that a marking would serve as an effective deterrent. thank you for this sensible information.

ITS LIKE A roach & ant chalk... its in an orange box.... it wont kill them, just makes a barrier they wont cross... very effective if you have ants

do you have a link or a source?

we don't have any insect issues - just some ants that appear for a short time in springtime and  then go away, but i'd like to pass on your chalk alternative to others!

thx again for the tip!

THE boxes look like this sometimes... sometimes just has Chinese script... i never seen this box before, liked the "miraculous"  part haha

Sorry Oscar, they make me run and scream, and they always fly straight to me!

I do like spiders.

they don't make you run and scream myca - you do that on your own.

if they fly straight to you, possibly they like you!

here's an interesting revelation about them:

"Research has shown that group-based decision-making is responsible for complex behavior such as resource allocation. In a study where 50 cockroaches were placed in a dish with three shelters with a capacity for 40 insects in each, the insects arranged themselves in two shelters with 25 insects in each, leaving the third shelter empty. When the capacity of the shelters was increased to more than 50 insects per shelter, all of the cockroaches arranged themselves in one shelter. Researchers found a balance between cooperation and competition exists in the group decision-making behavior found in cockroaches. The models used in this research can also explain the group dynamics of other insects and animals.[10]

(a better explanation is given in the actual study that the [10] links to.)

i'm glad you like spiders. here's one of my son's former friends:

what is most interesting is that there is total confidence between the two of them. the spider doesn't jump away and enjoys the company as much as kyron (who should have some more details about their friendship posted before too long).

there are several other spider pics taken by my son in the link i gave to oscar which you may enjoy. they appear to be much more than 'a bug' after some investigation - and their aesthetics are remarkable!

Keep your place as clean as possible- eliminate any sources of food and water.  This will only work so much if your neighbors are messy.  Look for roaches and/or droppings in hidden areas.  If/when you see them, scatter a home-made remedy in those areas.  Get boric acid in powder form from the pharmacy, and mix 50:50 with confectionary sugar.  The fine powder is more effective than the common granule form.

Your complex may routinely spray in your apartment, even against your will.  If so, and you are able to control the roaches without their sprays, tell the management you have a medical condition (low cholinesterase levels) that makes you extremely sensitive to pesticides.
