But I do have a question about the 811 ratio. I know protein is somehow related to production of cortisol as well as promotion of cancer and other ailments. However, to my knowledge this was only true for animal protein. I've come across a couple things lately that indicate otherwise- Other than not combining well with most foods, is plant protein dangerous at levels higher than 10%? Or is it safe, just less than optimal?

Yet, high or low, the level of plant protien did not affect tumor growth at all. So you don't need to worry about going above 10% when it comes to plant protien-- do get at least 4-5% though, as that is what Campbell says is the minimum required by most adults.

Permalink Reply by Iron Clad Ben on June 16, 2012 at 5:39pm It's really hard to consistently get over 10% from plant sources unless you are consuming large amounts of protein supplements (hemp/rice/soy protein isolate). At that point it's probably not helpful, and the only thing it's really hurting is your bank account.
Permalink Reply by AJ on June 16, 2012 at 5:46pm No, I definitely wouldn't use a supplement. I'm not even concerned with changing my diet, I'm happy with 811rv! This is really just for my own mental database. I'm the only vegan anyone around me knows so I get all the questions. I know why I personally eat 811 but when people ask questions about the relationship between protein and illness/weight/general health and the vegan diet I like to be able to answer, because any version of a 100% vegan diet is better than the a meat/dairy-based alternative, and I strongly promote interest in the vegan lifestyle.
By plant sources were you just referring to 30BaD promoted ones? What if a cooked vegan ate a lot of lentils, for example. Other than slow digestion would that be problematic?

Permalink Reply by PK on June 17, 2012 at 3:30am There is evidence that plant protein such as that found in wheat and grain products at least inhibits the cure of cancer. Nathan Pritikin who in the 1970s promoted a grain and starch based diet, suffered decades from leukemia. Ross Horne also observed that some of the patients who were vegan under his care but had problems like cancer and arthritis were not healing from their conditions.
I have to look it up the page number, but I believe there was one reference in the China Study that alluded to the fact that diets high in plant proteins could also increase risks of cancers. I believe soy proteins were studied.
Keep in mind that proteins, in spite of their sources, animal or plant, have similar make and amino acids, and break down in the body into acidic compounds (like sulphur if memory serves me correctly.)
Animal products tend to be very high in proteins and other harmful things like fats and uric acid.
Some plant products like grains, beans, potatoes, nuts, and seeds are high in protein. On an emergency basis, we can eat a little bit of them, and may be raw nuts and seeds serve some purpose as even primates eat about 5% of their diet from nuts and seeds.
But when we start consuming large quantities of these foods, we get sick/
****
All living things have at least about 5% protein and fat. We cannot escape eating it on a fruit diet. However, we too need a little bit of protein and fat to build healthy cells. If our body cells are about 5% protein, then getting 5-10% in the diet is more than sufficient as we also recycle about 75% of our body's protein.
For body builders and atheletes who may have an interest in eating more protein, they should look more at the grams consumed verses percentage in the diet. As they exercise more, their calorie consumption increases, and naturally the grams of protein increase too. When the grams of protein consumed exceeds about 65 though, health problems can develop.

Permalink Reply by Vice Abattoir on June 17, 2012 at 3:31am Depends on the protein and the clarity of the food.
If you take processed suppliments, which are most likely chemically-made proteins, or powdered plant protein which is heavily processed as well, that's not safe for ANYONE. No processed foods are ever safe for anyone.
you're safe on the 811 diet cause all food is in it's natural form, and in most cases organic, so you consume no unnatural chemicals to shock your body and start growing tumors.
The causes of cancer are numerous, it's not limited to one thing.
Permalink Reply by AJ on June 17, 2012 at 4:14am Thanks to both of you, PK and Vice! That's the exact info I was looking for. Like I said, I'm a happy 811rv and am going to remain as such. However, I've gotten some friends interested in vegan, but not 811rv, so I want to be able to still guide them to a better lifestyle than the SAD one(lolz punz) they live now. I'm building an arsenal of information so I can help save the animals, planet, and the health of my friends in any way I can. So yup, thanks again =]
