30 Bananas a Day!

My hair used to be so thick and shiny. I would always receive compliments on it! But after my eating disorder got pretty bad, it thinned significantly and got very weak/dull looking.

There have been points since then when I've eaten an adequate amount of calories (and dabbled with 811) but it has been about 6 months since I have eaten HCLF consistently (2500 cals average).

My hair had seemed to start thickening again and my hairdresser said the new hair I had growing in was healthy. HOWEVER, as of about a week ago I have started losing hair again in mass amounts and it is scaring me. I have not had any significant changes or added stress.

Pleas help, because I don't know what to do.

(By the way, I have been free of traditional sulfate shampoo for about a year or so. I use either baking soda or organic biotin shampoo about 3x a week and condition with ACV or organic conditioner.)

hair loss may just be your body shoving the old hair out and making new ones, each hair doesnt grow forever, it gets to a certain length then your scalp shoves it out and a few weeks or months later a new one grows. happened to me a couple years ago. i thought i was sick! i lost SO much hair for about 2-3 months but then i noticed the new hair coming in about 3 months later.

It is a lot of loss though- more than what's considered normal. Although I believe that in the summer it's typical to shed more?

Get your blood tested to see if you have any vitamin and mineral deficiencies.

Eating disorders severely deplete your body's mineral reserves and you might need to supplement to bring those levels back to normal until you can rely on food for all of your nutrients.

I would also check your hormones to make sure you are not estrogen dominant and also check your thyroid. Again, restriction slows down basic functions in the body. Extra calories are required to get everything working properly again.

The men in the Minnesota Starvation Experiment had to eat 4000+ calories a day in order to heal themselves (If I recall correctly, no amount of supplementation while they were eating "normal amounts" properly restored their bodies because what they really needed were calories).

Thank you, I have a doctor's appt scheduled in a month where I will get vitamin/hormone testing.. so I guess we'll see! I do sometimes wonder if I am not getting enough variety (or protein as it is usually below 10%).

Has it grown back since then?

How is your stress levels?   Enough sleep? Plenty of sunshine?  I've had this issue for the longest time and I have finally eliminated all these issues.  3 months of sufficient amounts of sleep, sunshine everyday if possible, low stress and I am noticing a huge difference in my hair thickness.  I don't know if it has to do with the fact I have been eating a lot of sweet potatoes and sweating a lot but I am liking it! :)  Hope you figure things out.  Blessings!

Al three have been great! A few months ago I was pretty busy with a ton going on (but not stressed, per se). Now, however, stress levels couldn't be better. Maybe I just need more time then! Thanks for the encouragement. And maybe I'll try to eat more sweet potatoes (:

I really wish I knew how to help you Quincy, but all I can offer is my own hair loss experience.  When I was about 17 years old my hair fell out. About half of all the hair I had in one night! Dont know why...too many possible reasons... drugs, stress, nutrient deficiency, too much hair dye/product etc etc ... anyway Im telling you this coz I wanted you to know that it all grew back.  It was really really REALLY traumatic at the time, but it taught me a lot about caring what other people think and made me a much stronger person.  Oh and my mum looses clumps of her hair when she is massively stressed, which always grow back.  Big hugs

I had a good friend who was raw vegan for a while and experienced hair loss/thinning or her hair to the point where it became physically noticeable to others and upon seeing her doctor and having bloodwork run, she was extremely B-Vitamin deficient. Might want to have some bloodwork done to see if yours is the same case.

I have never heard of using ACV as a conditioner- I would have thought it would dry out your hair.
