I have a question that I have been meaning to ask for a long time now about oranges.
I used to eat oranges quite a lot, but after being really ill from them last year i no longer do. Some types of orange/ orange juice had always made me feel a bit nauseous and have a headache, but I was so unwell anyway when I was younger that it was hard to say for sure what was causing these symptoms so I didn't think I needed to stop eating them. However, about a year ago, I ran out of other fruit, but still had my months supply of oranges, so rather than eat cooked I figured I'd just have these. The first day I had like 30 smallish oranges and I got so sick that night. I got really bad nausea, headache and was drenched in sweat, then I kept vomiting for the rest of the night. It took me weeks to fully recover from them I was so sick.
I know a lot of elimination diets don't allow citrus and i just wondered if anyone could tell me why? Freelee and a lot of others eat oranges so they are allowed on 80/10/10 right? Maybe the citrus made me detox real fast? Maybe I'm intolerant to oranges? Any ideas? I do get really bad sickness and dizzyness if I smell any products that are lemon/ orange flavour, like washing up liquid, air freshener or floor polish, so maybe I'm just not good with citrus at all?
I'd be grateful for any help with this. I'd love to be able to eat oranges again.
Thanks,
Esperanza

You know, now that I think of it, sometimes when I eat 4 or 5 large oranges, it sometimes makes me feel a bit queasy, but I don't seem to have the same issue with clementines.

That's true, I used to be fine with the little christmas oranges and blood oranges too, just not with the regular oranges. Maybe I'll give clementines a go again.

Based on personal experience and dealing with members of 30BaD, I recommend skip the juicing and here is why.
Many of our members have had troubles with juicing such as blood sugar spikes, dizziness and brain fog, diarrhea, and constipation.
Juicing removes the fiber from the fruits n veggies.
Fiber is much need in our intestines to regulate hydration and water absorption, to slow down digestion so that the body can slowly and properly assimilate vitamins and minerals, prevents blood sugar hikes, and prevents diarrhea and constipation.
It is better to train yourself and your digestive system right from the beginning to properly chew, digest, and assimilate fruits and leafy greens.
If you are having a difficult time with calories, then smoothies might be a compromise. With smoothies, the whole fruits and greens are blended and some of the fiber is still intact.
If you have not used your juicer, you might be able to return it. Or, see if it has an option like a blender to make smoothies.
Peace, PK
Permalink Reply by PK on January 14, 2012 at 6:59am Well, there are several possibilities starting with possibly having a batch of contaminated oranges.
Yes, oranges are excellent detoxers! The vitamin C is great for building and rebuilding a healthy immune system and tissues, anti histamine, anti pain, anti inflammatory, and great for detox, and in fact some detox programs do use oranges.
It is possible you were in a detox crises.
What you can do is mix them in slowly. Maybe eat a few bananas and 1-2 oranges. Or eat just one mono meal of oranges day every few days.
If you cannot tolerate these small amounts, then yes, it may be your own body resisting them. I know personally, I cannot eat pineapple or avocado, so it is possible to have a personal reaction or allergy to a certain type of fruit.

Here is a great article about oranges:
I love oranges and honey tangerines. They really brighten a winter day! Liquid sunshine. ♥
I think that often the issue is that the oranges may have been picked green and shipped great distances. So you may be eating unripe oranges or ones with pesticides.
Or you may just have overall health issues that need resolving. Hopefully your sensitivity to oranges will reduce over time as you get healthier. Ripe, fresh oranges and cleaning products with citrus scent are two different things.
