my staple are bananas but i want to start getting some oranges, i remember buying a bag and they were so sour and not sweet, how do i tell if they are ripe? thanks
Permalink Reply by ednshell on June 25, 2012 at 3:09pm they should be super sweet and no burning sensation on your mouth, they require a taste test to check for ripeness, ask any produce person to slice one up for you to taste, they are happy to to do it, it's standard practice.

I've had very yummy sweet oranges that look old and dried out and good looking ones on the outside too, so I don't think that counts for much.

Great tip thanks:)

Permalink Reply by DURIANRIDER on June 25, 2012 at 5:12pm How do you tell if they are ripe? They will be SUGAR sweet. Like sickly sweet. Its pretty hard to find ripe oranges in the shops IMHO. I LOVE oranges but they are really hard to find ripe and quality.
Ive found ripe oranges have dents on the sides and are so soft you can push a finger thru em. We just got 30kg of oranges from a market. The lady was spewing cos we almost bought her out lol! You would think you would be stoked to sell so many in one hit..
This is a ripe orange. VERY soft and when you push with your thumb it leaves a big dent.
