I could have labelled this "one of the sadest" or "one of the scariest" but it just reinforces myths and questions nutritional education of our population...
Yesterday at the family centre I take my son to I overheard three women talking. They were all discussing how they wanted to loose weight (and they definitely needed...in my concern not saying it to be mean). At the time one of the them was snacking on carrots as her healthy snack. One of the other ladies brings up carrots in their discussion on foods they are trying not to eat. She says (summed up version)
"Carrots are not good to eat because they have sugar in them, especially when they are cooked. But you shouldn't eat apples either. However carrots are okay because there are worse things to eat." And all the ladies nod in agreement and carry on talking about what they should eat and go for walks, etc. Funny thing is that they also all mentioned at one point how no matter what they do they can't seem to loose weight!
AGH! I was so concerned and worried for them! But at the same time I don't want to bud into someone else's conversation as I would like to avoid conflict. I am starting to say more but only when asked or if I am sort of already in the conversation.
Anyways, just thought I would share :)
Whats are your thoughts?
Permalink Reply by Raw Zombie on January 18, 2012 at 8:59am back in the day before I used to know what I know now, I used a very simple onliner stating
give some one X calories amount of carrots or
give some x calories of sugar/meat/fatty food of your choice ?
which one do you think is going to make them fat?
whens the last time I saw a fat fruitatarin etc
just keep it simple, don't overwhelm people with factoids, charts, statistics, graphs etc they need a general idea first people are less concerned with studies than common sense approaches

Permalink Reply by Amanda Lily on January 18, 2012 at 9:24am No kidding, right? I was thinking: If they aren't eating fruits or vegetables what are they eating to be healthy???
Permalink Reply by Kimberry on January 18, 2012 at 9:35am Wow. I would have loved to talk to them. I've been giving out all the info I can, but mostly when asked.
Has anyone had success in talking to people who didn't really ask you?
I was thinking that I would print out this pamphlet or make one of my own, with links to this site and Dr. Graham's book. And maybe if I overhear someone's conversation, go up to them and say, "Sorry, I couldn't help overhearing, but I'm into nutrition and health and I thought you might be interested in this lifestyle" and give them a couple pamphlets.
I'm sure there would be the cases where they'd be all offended or something, but the majority would probably be really pleased, especially because you're not trying to sell them something, just give them information. :)
Pamphlet is a really weird word. Pamphlet. Pam...phlet.

Lol I was thinking the same thing while reading through your comment.
Permalink Reply by DURIANRIDER on January 29, 2012 at 2:45pm I ALWAYS but in. I was at the airport yesterday and only literally had 3 seconds to say something to the chick at security who was talking about weight loss with her co worker. I just said 'hey, have you read skinny bitch yet? read it!' and walked thru the metal detector and kept on walking.
I butt in all the time. Ive helped a lot of people help themselves that way. I NEVER wait for an invite, I just go in with a smile and truth guns blazing.
I HATE not saying anything. It stays with me all day.. 'you should of said something you gutless punce!'. No more. I ALWAYS speak up and have fun doing so. Im not into conflict, Im into helping people by sharing the truth with em. If they want to take it personally, thats their problem. Im not attached what they think, Im attached to me sharing the truth.
Tell people to watch a youtube channel. Tell em about a book. Tell em about some crazy chick that eats so much fruit but has such a hot healthy body.

Right on there! If you overhear women talking about losing weight... just butt in and say: "have you heard of Freelee? She has a youtube channel. Check her out; she eats over 3000 calories a day an is in amazing shape!" And just leave it at that. Hopefully, you'll peak their curiosity. All it takes is for one of them to remember her name and look her up. :)
And the opposite applies. If guys are talking about nutrition and health and diet, I think we all know who to send em to!
Permalink Reply by DURIANRIDER on January 30, 2012 at 5:20pm I have learnt you can almost say anything with a smile and enthusiasm. Unless the person is really dehydrated and undercarbed, there wont be any negativity Ive found. Even if their is, it wont be anything real.
