Media Release - Global National's No Country for Animals, July 28, 10 PM

GLOBAL NATIONAL'S KEVIN NEWMAN LOOKS AT CANADA' S REAL RECORD ON ANIMAL RIGHTS IN REVEALED: NO COUNTRY FOR ANIMALS

GLOBAL TELEVISION, WEDNESDAY, JULY 28 AT 10PM

Kevin Newman deals with another hot issue: Do animals have any rights in Canada? That's a question he poses in the latest instalment of the 'Revealed' documentary series, produced by 90th Parallel Productions for Global Television. NO COUNTRY FOR ANIMALS examines Canada's deplorable record on animal welfare and looks at the people who are fighting to bring about much-needed change. It's part of Global Television's summer documentary series 'Currents' and will be telecast on Wednesday, July 28 at 10PM.

"The issue of how we treat our animals is a visceral one and the reality of what's been happening in this country isn't easy to take," Kevin Newman said. "I believe this is a subject that doesn't get enough attention and the impetus for the 'Revealed' series with 90th Parallel is to provide a platform to illuminate issues in an incisive way. I certainly hope we've succeeded with this important topic." Newman narrates this film and co-wrote and co-produced.

Without being unnecessarily graphic, NO COUNTRY FOR ANIMALS exposes Quebec's notorious puppy mills and examines the mistreatment of animals raised for food. We see the gestation crates where animals spend their entire lives confined in standing positions, and overcrowded abattoir-bound trucks where livestock can go for days without food or water.

It all happens because Canada has very outdated, ineffectual laws protecting animals and when cruelty charges are made, they are often dismissed. "In Canada animals are property," explains one activist. Our legal standards protecting animals lag far behind the European Union or California, for example, where major steps have been taken to protect animals and enhance their lives.

This documentary introduces viewers to some of the people who are fighting to bring about change in this country. There's Nicole Joncas challenging the Quebec courts to close their horrific puppy mills, or Twyla Francois, armed with an undercover camera, campaigning vigorously to bring attention to the mistreatment of farm animals. We meet Canada's first lawyer to specialize in animal law, and a new, young generation dedicated to the fight to improve the lives of animals through legal and educational means. NO COUNTRY FOR ANIMALS is a documentary that will enlighten and enrage you. And will leave you wondering how humane our society really is.

NO COUNTRY FOR ANIMALS is directed by Karen Pinker. It is produced by 90th Parallel Productions Ltd in association with Canwest. Gordon Henderson is executive producer.

idk what canada is doing

they chose to repopulate an endangered species of rattlesnake around tobermory, ontario
now they have completely overrun the habitat and killed off every other animal
foxes, rabbits, etc everything except bears

now there are so many of them that they're in people's gardens and often get run over by cars on the back streets
it's illegal to kill them but people do it all the time because there are so many of them

i've seen 9 there over the past 4 years (I visit for a week each year)
my dad and I were hiking and we came across two
he took a rock and smashed it on one of the snake's head over and over till it died

bad memories but i'm afraid to visit now they're all over the place

well david, it certainly ain't the true north strong and free. human and animal rights abusers have taken the reigns doing the bidding of lobby groups. the place needs a serious cleaning!

In the documentary No Country for Animals, co-written, co-produced and narrated by Global National anchor Kevin Newman, animal rights activist Twyla rescues hens from a battery cage.

HANDOUT
As he winds down a decade-long gig as Global National anchor, Kevin Newman is stirring the pot with a pair of arresting documentaries.

Airing Wednesday at 10 p.m., No Country for Animals challenges Canada's record as a rights haven in light of rampant mistreatment of food animals. The program combines undercover footage of the abuse of captive animals destined for slaughter with disturbing images from puppy mills, interviews with activists, and data comparing Canadian legal standards with some American and European jurisdictions to make its point.

Newman narrated, co-wrote and co-produced the documentary, directed by Karen Pinker in a partnership between Canwest and 90th Parallel Productions.

"My wife and I had a friend who works for the (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) out in Vancouver and she always complained that all of these investigations that occur, they work their tail off, they get charges finally, they get the evidence and the vast majority of the cases of animal abuse are dismissed by courts," he said by phone from Ottawa of the impetus for the project.

"We looked at the percentage of animal abuse cases that get convicted in Canada: 0.01 per cent. I can't think of another crime where 99.9 per cent of people charged with it get off. So, something is wrong with the law. It hasn't changed since the Criminal Code was written in the 19th century and it treats animals as property, as having no more rights than a table."

The film impels improved standards for food animals, which are currently allowed to be transported up to 52 hours without food or water.

"Are we willing to give our food animals the rights of a sentient being if it means we have to pay a lot more for steak?" Newman pondered. "The viewer has to decide: 'Am I willing to pay a lot more for meat and have it less often, if it means the animal had a better life?'"

Last week, Missing the Target premiered, delving into the gun debate ahead of the likely dismantling of the gun registry this fall. The program focused on the plethora of illegal U.S. handguns winding up with Canadian youth and the increase in related deaths, such as the high-profile slayings of Torontonians Ephraim Brown, 11, and Jordan Manners, 15. Newman said he hoped to broaden the debate beyond controlling guns in the hands of legal gun owners.

"We're so focused on the weapons themselves, the other thing is how much attention are we paying on why young men, primarily, turn to the weapons, the issues of power, the social issues. I was struck by the fact that there was one man in charge of an anti-gang program in the Jane-Finch corridor. A lot of money is spent on security, on catching weapons, which is good, but almost no money seems to be flowing into asking the question 'Why is there a market?'"

The documentaries were the third and fourth of the six part Revealed series that began in 2007 with investigations of our role in the Afghan war and the rise of Christian fundamentalism in Canada.

"In daily news, you get used to following a story incrementally, you never step back and look at the big picture enough," said Newman. "For me, it was an opportunity to identify stories and things that I saw as trends in the country that were being under-reported and look at them over a period of time."

He expects to have the final instalments on wrongly accused crime suspects completed by December.

"I hope I can keep doing this, but it's up to me to sell myself," said Newman, whose last Global broadcast is pegged for Aug. 20.

"I have no job to go to and I'm not talking to anybody. I decided at this stage in my life the best thing I can do is rest and recharge and then when I feel that way give it all I have to whatever comes next. The opportunity may be in traditional media as it makes the transference, or the opportunity may exist in non-traditional media.

"I've still got lot of energy to chase opportunity, I just need the ability to have a little more clarity of where that opportunity is."

This is terrible, just finished watching Food, inc and feel the overwhelming need to get out of the US- move to the tropics and buy local/fresh/non-GMO/organic produce (hopefully it still exists!)

and now to pull up 30bad and the first thing I see is what's happening in Canada seems to be even worse.

Everything I read/watch I post of fbook to try and get through to all of the SAD "friends", but it seems to not even go in one ear and out the other...they have invisible force fields up or something where they don't even acknowledge that such evil and corruption exists in the world. And how many times I've heard oh I like meat too much or cheese or whatever. Well I love my life and the lives of others, and the lives of animals

b the change u want to see

...feeling a bit hopeless right now going to go gorge myself on strawberries and dates see if can shake these feelings-- o yea wishing death to Monsanto corp...lol

jes, nice to see you back here again! hope camp is going well for you.

some people take a bit of time before acknowledgment becomes public because they have a vested interest in what they are doing. as a result, even though inside they know what they do is wrong, they try to keep up appearances. very often, this form of lying appears as reality in their egos. as bruce cockburn sang in people see through you: "you've been lying so long, you don't know what's real".

their acknowledgement isn't important because our role isn't to win debating points. it is to provide education.

don't be too concerned about the force fields - truth always gets through the thickest barriers eventually and remember the saying,

"Those who protest against compassion the strongest, have to work the hardest to imprison their conscience."
