An abnormality that provides a predisposition to a disease with a low mortality rate could be persistent if it was widespread enough. I think this is referred to as weak selection.

"A fruity mother would have a perfectly healthy baby..."
Seems like a dangerous assumption?
i don't understand why you think peter is being dangerously assumptive. doesn't it make sense that if you are healthy and lead a healthy life, your chances of producing healthy offspring increase. surely the opposite is easy to see - eat garbage, smoke, drink and your baby will likely not fare too well.
so why is the assumption dangerous?

Thanks for the reply. I agree with you. My point was only that it's risky to take your argument to its logical extreme, i.e. by assuming that a perfectly healthy mother is guaranteed to give birth to a healthy baby.
Firstly because this ignores the possibility that medical conditions can occur 'randomly' (i.e. be both truly idiopathic and generally prevalent), regardless of the mother's health.
Secondly because it's unrealistic, at present, to try to characterise or identify a state of 'perfect' health.

In the context of the original post, I've no idea what impact following 811 and natural birthing procedures etc. will have on the incidence of hemorrhagic disease. I don't necessarily agree with universal vitK injections either. I just think it's irresponsibly absolutist to suggest that 811 is a panacea that removes every advantage of medical intervention. This applies both specifically to this issue and in a broader sense.
Permalink Reply by pradtf on April 19, 2012 at 1:20pm yes nathan! and i agree with what you have said above too!
811 shouldn't be used as a panacea. it is a healthy diet.
one will derive the benefits of a healthy diet by following it and will have a stronger body and recoveries from various things. the likelihood of having a healthy baby from a healthy mother in a healthy environment, is also good.
however, if your baby is in a breach position don't expect that a few bites of a watermelon will turn the munchkin around.

Permalink Reply by SharnaRaw on April 19, 2012 at 4:13am The problem I see with the whole vaccine/vit K delima is this...why for every child?? Since when is medicine about assuming that every one needs the same intervention? Tell me what the reasons are for MY child needing a vit K shot. Since when are ALL babies born with this terrible problem? I don't like treatment when there is no basis for it.

You inspired me to look up "iatrogenic", which led to a search on the idea of "iatrogenocide".
Permalink Reply by pradtf on April 19, 2012 at 7:54am why for every child?
because it is financially profitable.
you asked a brilliant question, sharnaraw!
i think my answer is worthy of it.

Permalink Reply by Yogaranka on April 19, 2012 at 8:01am In one of Dr. Goldhammer's talk (True North Fasting Center, CA), he mentions how the FDA was considering putting blood pressure lowering drugs into the public water supply, but luckily for all of us, the side effect of this drug is so bad, it outweighs the benefit. But just think how these officials think about the public!
Which also made me think, that the higher the population, the more we become just statistics, just numbers in a game.

even worse than just statistics, yogaranka - mere commodities.
the pharma profession is not interested in maintaining a healthy population - there is no money in doing so. if you can't find sick people, make them! send out some trained recruiters, corral the cattle in and they are yours to milk for good!
