Hello everyone, I'm making this post while I'm having this issue, and really need some advice. I've struggled with binge eating for years, and I'm trying to transition to raw foods, and I'm doing well so far. I'm not 100% raw yet though. At the moment I'm having urges to go binge eat, and eat some boca chicken burgers, which are vegetarian. I know I'm not doing it for hunger reasons. I'm wondering what do to, should I eat nothing, or should I load up on fruit? I'd usually have the desire to binge eat pizza, so I'm atleast happy I don't have that desire. It's night time, after 9pm, so I don't know if all the sugar would be good, especially if I'm gonna sleep good tonight. Any suggestions?

Permalink Reply by AEM on April 24, 2012 at 12:32pm Hi Micah, I would recommend that you get rid of all of the foods that your inclined to binge on...and even though the boca vegetarian chicken burgers are better than pizza I would suggest that you avoid indulging in them (high fat). Instead eat some fruit or force yourself to go to sleep. But if the urges are too great drink some water and eat as much fruit as can fill you. Maybe fruit with high water content would be best...
I think another great thing to do would be to change your current thought patterns...try not thinking about eating, especially if you're worried about doing it before bed time. Maybe read a book instead? I hope this helps, have a great one :)

Permalink Reply by Sorcha Sloane on April 24, 2012 at 2:18pm How long have you been in this transition phase and how many calories would you estimate that you get raw? I ask, because I had very different things that I did at different states that has worked for me. (I also suffer from eating disorders and binge eating). I did this...
Stage 1: Unlearn Associating Bad Food With Feeling Good - I see this phase as getting the body/brain chemicals in line, first. This phase took me about 3 weeks, but in it, I made specific raw fruit goals for the day (like 2,000 calories from fruit), and I told myself that I could eat "whatever I wanted" after that so long as I got in my 2,000 fruit calories. It really didn't take my body long to learn (not just know intellectually), that the fruit made me feel better, and to not associate lfrv with "negatives" (like not being able to eat this that and the other). I only gained 3 pounds in the first week and a half doing this, and quickly lost it in the next week. I actually found myself starting to crave things like dates and raisins.
Stage 2: Taking the Plunge - This phase was more about getting the mind in line. Once I got to the point where when I thought of my binge food and my favorite raw vegan food, and imagined tasting them, that I was honestly admitting (and not just telling myself) that the fruit choice *would* taste better, yet I still wanted the binge food for psychological comfort/habit reasons, I decided it was time to take the plunge and go 100% lfrv and just eat as much as I wanted. I ate A LOT of dried fruit (as well as fresh fruit) in this time period, just because it's easier to carry around and nibble/binge on. Seriously, I only had like 3 bad days of emotionally binging of the raw food. It just stops on its own when you go 100%. But, as a binger eat with huge emotional eater issues, I don't think I could have gone 100% without the "retraining" of my mind period.
Eventually I got to what I consider myself in now with is Stage 3: Learning Curve, where I don't binge, but I'm still learning my bodys' needs and making sure I'm never stranded and undercarbed. I'm still really bad at this right now and get dangerously close to losing it, but I've managed through because my mind/psychology has changed.
P.S. I wouldn't worry about what time of day/night I ate sugar ever... In fact, when I was still eating cooked foods, I needed the sugar at night so I wouldn't be totally low blood sugar monster in the morning. I almost blacked out in the shower one morning.

Permalink Reply by brina on April 24, 2012 at 2:48pm i love all of this stuff you said and i just want to add that if you want to eat ice cream, you can take frozen fruit and blend it with seed mylk that has a tiny bit of vanilla in it. it's so good, and really easy. cures the craving and you feel so good for so many reasons!
you could just put something quick together like that anytime you want something in particular. if you saw freelee's video on raw tiramisu, it's a perfect example. there's a million different ways to hit the spot without dumping garbage in. <3
btw, i used to eat boca and tofu crap, it is sooooo bad. that's maybe a whole different story in a way, bc you wanna focus on the good, but you could prolly benefit by doing what arvis said up there. maybe not throw it away; maybe give it to a food bank or something for people who would choose to eat such sh## and worse. . . but, yeah. good luck.
