Our recommendation regarding juices and juicing"
The case against juicing:
Based on personal experience and dealing with members of 30BaD, we recommend skip the juicing and here is why:
Many of our members have had troubles with juicing such as indigestion, sour and or acidic stomach, acid reflux, blood sugar spikes, dizziness and brain fog, diarrhea, constipation, and inability to absorb and assimilate calories, vitamins and minerals in spite of high calorie count.
Juicing removes the fiber from the fruits n veggies.
Fiber is much needed in our intestines to regulate hydration and water absorption, to slow down digestion so that the body can slowly and properly assimilate vitamins and minerals, prevents blood sugar hikes, and prevents diarrhea and constipation.
Without this fiber, nutrients, calories, and carbohydrates can pass right through the system without being digested and assimilated and possibly lead to weight loss and or malnutrition.
It is better to train yourself and your digestive system right from the beginning to properly chew, digest, and assimilate fruits and leafy greens.
If you are having a difficult time with calories, then smoothies might be a compromise. With smoothies, the whole fruits and greens are blended and some of the fiber is still intact.
**********
Another problem with companies like Naked Juice is the possibility that they are pastuerizing and or cooking their juices. Then one is basically drinking a dead product that is lacking in enzymes and viable vitamins and minerals. Short term, on an emergency basis, these might be a quick calorie or carb source, but they should not be the staple of one's meals.
******
If one likes juicing, it is highly recommend to make fresh smoothies yourself instead. Then you know for sure what ingredients are going inside. If drank fresh, smoothies may still have some of their enzymes and nutrients in tact as well.
Peace, PK

Permalink Reply by Stephanie McClennon on March 23, 2012 at 2:50am delicious, and if i'm hungry and that's my only option (like if i'm at starbucks at the airport and there isn't any fresh food other than a few bananas, which i'll take, and a few fruit salad cups, which i'll take) then i'll get them, usually in addition to something else (like the bananas and fruit salad at starbucks). it's not going to kill you, but it's also not always a top choice. i really like the naked green power juice/smoothie. it's really delicious and even though there aren't any enzymes in the juice anymore (if you're buying juice and it's either on the shelf or in the fridge, it's been pasteurized. if it's really expensive and in the freezer, it might be raw) it's still got some good stuff in there and it gives me the little boost i need.
Permalink Reply by Iron Clad Ben on March 23, 2012 at 2:56am They are pasteurized so most of the nutrients have been destroyed. Pretty much a waste of money, IMO.
Permalink Reply by Motoman on April 7, 2013 at 3:38am A kid died drinking Odwalla (e.coli) ... back when they didn't pasteurise. One of their plants was here in Davenport, Ca. Sad story ... but man you should've tried their juices back then ... incredible!! nothing like today! Definitely a waste of money IMO (unless you're in a REAL pinch)

I find fresh made juice a great way to get some carbs to power a workout but if I can't make the juice fresh or get it made fresh then I would go for a melon. Melon's digest very fast. My next choice to power a workout would be other fresh whole fruits. If you eat whole fruit to power a workout then you will need to allow more time for digestion before exercising. The enzymes in the fresh food help to digest the food better and faster.
Permalink Reply by Michelle N on March 23, 2012 at 8:43am pasteurized. Not horrible but not ideal. Plus they seem somewhat expensive to me. I feel like I could blend up some fruity concoction thats tastier and gives me more bang for my buck. :)
