I've personally found that the more sleep I have the better I feel. When I left my job and started getting more sleep I noticed a huge difference. Even though I thought I felt better on less sleep while I was doing it. Saw this McDougall video just now where he recommends 6 - 7 hours. Says if you get less sleep you'll be more hyper. I think he's a little too hyper in these videos personally lol. More sleep for him eh? Maybe if you're healthy and not working out too much you can get away with that little sleep on a consistent basis but I think if you're depressed you've probably got healing to do and sleep is great for that.

Permalink Reply by Janna Bannanna on December 1, 2011 at 5:31am I'd have to agree with you guys, sleep helps me a lot. I was a little down and very emotionally exhausted last night, went to sleep at 9pm was up at 10 to 6... so almost 9hrs sleep and i feel so much better! I probably could've slept more but my alarm went off. I'll get a good sleep in on the weekend to test his theory... see if my whole day is blue, hmmmm.

This is incorrect. If you are depressed, you are more likely to run into problems with insufficient sleep. What normally happens with depression is that people spend more time in REM sleep, which uses up energy, so it makes people feel tired. But this is only because REM sleep is prioritised above the other phases of sleep. We use REM to defuse emotional arousal and to program learned behaviours. Cutting back on sleep when depressed will only perpetuate the problem, unless you are practively doing things, like he suggests to help meet your needs differently, which may reduce emotional arousal more in the waking state (eg. eating more carbs, exercising, getting sunshine etc...although these things alone won't do everything as there will likely be other causes too.).
Take care
