30 Bananas a Day!

hey 30BAD, thought i might as well start out a discussion of our monkey bar gym which 100% works with the 30bad plan:)
we call it MBG3 (Monkey Bar Gym 3 is MBG training of skills: running, jumping, climbing and crawling. MBG restoration of Eischens Yoga and MBG nutrition which is 100% plant based as our goal - 811rv is the high goal:)
Each day we have free workouts on our Monkey Bar Gymnasium site:
http://monkeybargym.com/full-body-workouts.html
most of the time they are bodyweight & cable training, sometimes we add kettlebells or d-balls or sandbags or sledgehammers or tires, alot of the time we climb ropes or poles and then we do alot of running hills, stairs, sprints and jumping rope.
we intermix Eischens Yoga into each workout as the base of each and every movement
then to top it all off we eat the best diet in the world:) 100% plants:)
I'd love to see the 30BAD people check out our workouts and tell us how you like them.
We train hard, recover amazingly and eat great!!
join us:) and lets strengthen both our communities and the world:)
your friend,
jon

Yesterday I did a MBG workout similar to this;

I can definitely say that the MBG routines are tough & fun at the same time. The best possible combo I could hope for when trying to get in shape & improve my health. :) I'm grateful.
-Thanks Jon! :)

This is what the site looks like;

haha aimee, you found that in the outside magazine article on us:) good research:)
hope you're doing great today:)
I'm a big fan Jon and have been for awile...by the way I
loved the video of you and Mike Mahler snatching the
big bells!

I'm curious about your diet Jon...would you share a little?

Thanks,
Eric
hey eric, thanks alot, yeah that was a funny seminar...just gotten back from 4 weeks of hiking in the himalayans and first day back i'm doing that seminar and snatching the 56k:) felt super odd for me:)
i eat pretty much 811, but sometimes have cooked vegs at night instead of raw...eat about 4,400 cals a day. feel great doing so, no supplements, tons of fruit.
typical days meals:
10 bananas + 12 hawely dates smoothie
4 oranges
10 bananas + 5 cups of baby spinach
4 oranges
huge salad + veggies + some lentils or other beans, then maybe some sweet potatoes:)
2 apples
that is pretty much how it eat, drink coconut water when i train as well:)
glad you like what we're doing if you every have any other questions please feel free to ask okay my friend:)
jon
First of all awesome pics, the one handed hand stand great stuff I love doing hand stands :).
I have an unfinished basement at home and it is full of straps hanging all over the place (i have a TRX as well), almost enough of them that you can swing from one to another.
I had some questions for you if you don't mind.
A lot of people lose weight very fast within 2-3 weeks, Dr Graham says it is less toxins going in so the body starts to clean house gets rid of the extra water and fat that was protecting the body from toxins (I went from 24% body fat to 17% in 3 weeks and corresponded to weight loss about 15 pounds). Did you experience a drop in weight when transitioning?
A lot of people then have trouble putting on mass or keeping toned after, do you think it is due to the 811 foods? (not a lot of protein) or more the fact of training (a lot of people also don't train or don't train to put on size)?.
I see you eat pretty much 811 what Dr Graham recommends except for the lentils or beans do you feel they are necessary?
Do you feel the strict 811 diet can put on mass with proper training and it is more of a question upping the calories of fruits and veggies?.
Thanks
I am checking out you site good stuff
hey mikey, good question, yeah i dropped weight pretty quickly too (fat and some muscle) but stuck to it and although i felt pretty good energy on 811 i began to have a hard time getting back up to my normal strength for my normal performance level....so i began to loosen up a bit and eat more raw nuts/seeds, occasionally have some sprouted grains and other stuff and that helped me get back to my high strength levels across the board which if you're interested here is my blog to check what i'm up to:)
http://jonnyhinds.blogspot.com/search?updated-min=2010-01-01T00%3A0...
hope this helps mikey!
jon
Thanks Jon that helps,
I will check out you blog,
My energy is good like you said and recovery is great (due to the replacement of our glycogen stores) but I find I do a workout and the tone of the muscles don't stay as hard as they use to and it seems tough to build new muscle (although its still a bit to early to tell), its tough to know the reasons why sometimes.
yeah, that is what i was feeling after about 5-6 months of 811...slightly leaner and lower on the strength scale by a few notches. i've returned to my max levels of strength over the last two months as i returned to eating more raw nuts and seeds and occasional yams and grains. still eat most all of my foods un-cooked though.
still huge fruit bowl for breakfast but with some nuts:)
huge salad for lunch - same:) but maybe with some seeds:)
dinners might be steamed veggies and some sprouted grains and some beans
pretty similar still but just a few add ons:)
jon
Hey Jon

I noticed a power reduction on 811 too-pretty noticeable when your lifting weights most days. I did the same thing you did- add some cooked grains and veggies occasionally and eat lots of dates. I put 30 lbs back on pretty quick and significantly increased my power.

I've been using 811 almost 3 years and believe it creates very superior endurance athletes but is not quite as effective, in its pure form, for more power oriented athletes. Its encouraging to see you've been able to maintain your power level with very little cooked food.

I talked to Casey and Gabe and a few other members of your staff about 811 a few years ago. Are any of them using it too?

Great to see you here.
i've been following strictly 811rv without falter for just short of 2 years and in that time have built quite a bit of muscle mass and strength.. i strength train with weights typically 4-5 days per week and do more endurance-based exercise on the other days

the keys i've found to maintaining/building strength and muscle on this diet are adequate training (intense, focused resistance sessions), a lot of calories (smoothies of bananas/dates help a lot), and as much focus on recovery as on training (what i actually have to work at and be conscious of the most)

the carb source i think is not a large issue, except for the fact that your body is going to have to put less energy into digesting raw fruits & veg vs. cooked grains & veg, freeing up more vitality for recovery.. i can't really figure how eating starches vs. simple sugars are going to help strength gains, as long as the cals/carbs are equivalent
Yeh, I'm high intensity in my lifting and I have put on muscle too. I'm far stronger pound for pound than most people around me, but I'm talking about accomplished athlete levels of power...top 5 % plus type fitness and strength. I'm not sure why my strength increased when I added small amounts of cooked grains mostly ( maybe protein or as you say more calories.) I get a lot of kick from dates too which I didn't eat the first 2 years I was 811 and I have a health problem (essential tremor) that gets worse when I eat bananas so I don't have the caloricly dense food available to me that most 811ers use. The tremor also limits my intensity to merely above average versus what a very determined body builder or power athlete can bring to bear.

I belonged to Jon's gym here in Madison for a while and he's definitely an elite level power athlete. He's perhaps the only elite level power athlete I've seen in here (at least that I'm aware of), so it should be very informative seeing how he does on 811 over time. I've also never seen a top level power athlete featured on Dr G's site) I know 811 builds superior endurance athletes; now we get to see what happens in the power world? I know 811 is good for power, but is it the best? Jon can likely shed some light on this.
I would have to agree with you other then Jon there is not a lot of guys here at his level
