mamey - first try

soo, i tried mamey the other day.. my friend ordered a case of them from FL thru his organic distributor.. it was good, but i can't say that i was wowed.. however, i know they are not close to what i would get if i were in florida getting them tree ripened.. wasn't as soft and custardy as it looks in some of the pics and vids i've seen (which reinforces my belief that tropical fruit can't ripen the same in my temperate environment)

i described it as "a digestible carrot" lol.. wasn't incredibly sweet, so we made a pudding by blending a few of them with some dates.. ended up tasting even more like carrot when sweetened, which was kinda nice, since i haven't eaten carrots for a long time

*Update: I've had mamey many times since writing this, and it can indeed be very creamy, sweet and delicious (yes, pumpkin pie or sweet potato like). Conclusion is that this was a bad batch, possibly picked underripe or mistreated, preventing proper ripening. Def give it a try if you get the chance.

It wasn't ripe. Ripe mamey is a dream.

If it's hard and light orange you're screwed, just give it some more time.

So weird...I was going to ask you your opinion on mamey as I was thinking about ordering some. This answers that...it looks like the texture of a canistel and we know how that went over. I've been stalking Jourdan's shipping shop for jackfruit and its finally available so I'll let you know how it is

I have been eating lots of white sapotes lately,i have only ever had one mamey that was about 6 years ago,i remember it was very rich and tasted kind of like nutmeg.

Yea this was awhile ago, and was just a bad batch. I've had it many times since and some have been crazy good. I'll make a note in the discussion so no one writes it off because of my poor first impression.

do they taste anything like canistel/egg fruit? I hope not as I cannot stomach those at all!

No not really. Close to it in richness-factor, but the taste and texture is different.

oh good to hear :) Canistel makes me feel literally sick so I wouldn't want there to be more fruit that is the same.

I found canistel a bit tough going too,from memory,kind of sickly sweet.That being said i may love them now,cos i was new to being fruity in those days.

Not my favorite fruit on it's own, but hand-mashed with ripe bananas turns them into a yummy [and much palatable IMO] canistel pudding. I used to make this at 'standard raw' pot lucks and it was usually the first thing to go!
