30 Bananas a Day!

my wife and i have both been working at red lobster for over ten years now, we have been lfrv for a while now, we've come to the conclusion that we can not compomise our souls any longer, we will be quiting our jobs and moving when our rental lease is up in august. right now we live in sacramento, ca. being in california there is plenty of fruit at hand but we have decided florida is where it is at. we are looking for advice on places in florida to move. we would like to be in a small town, more rural area but still have easy access to all the wonderful tropical fruit out there. low cost of living would be great. we also have a two year old boy. we will be looking for jobs more in line with 811 lfrv when we get there. any advice would be greatly appreciated.

i remember reading your threads when you were moving, i've looked a lot into homestead, i dont want to live in the big city, i was born and raised in chicago and have lived in st. louis and now sacramento for ten years, i'm trying to get away from all that. thank you very much for responding, i'll be in touch
We are moving from St. Louis this summer and decided S. CA was the place to go for air quality and cheaper fruit. I was surprised to find Fl. produce about the same price as here in St. Louis and with the summers being so hot and humid we decided on CA. SO I'm curious why you all didn't just go further south. The water shortage there does freak me out a little. I loved homestead, FL., it seemed surprisingly affordable, the best air in the country, very rural yet close to so much, 30 to 40 minutes to Miami. I loved the people I met in Miami too. I also like Vero Beach but it's a little colder but a nice town too.
well, you go months at a time out here with out seeing a drop of rain and the parts of california that do see some rain just get a little to cold for me. i've been to all parts of socal and had great times but never felt like i would want to live there. growing up in the midwest i miss a good summer thunderstorm. the smoke from the fires out here can ruin an already dry summer. i guess we are just over california and ready for something new. don't get me wrong i have plenty of friends who live down south and love it
are there any clean air spots you can recommend we check out?

Do you need a car in Homstead?

I've lived in South FL most of my life and honestly, it's not very cheap to live here. And fruit isn't as cheap as you would expect it to be, so hold no expectations. Depending on where you live, for the most part there are just people and stimulation EVERYWHERE..

I'd say look into the Keys. That would probably be your best bet. I'm not a city girl either, and if I had the choice to I'd most likely move down there. & it's probably cheaper. I know for sure north FL isn't as tropical but it's wayyy cheaper in terms of paying bills, and there are definitely more desolate areas.
The Keys are supposed to have the best air quality in the country if I read/remember correctly. When I was in Fl. we were new to lfrv and we bought our produce mostly from regular grocery stores... we spent most of our time on the W. coast and got overly excited by some of the health food stores, but I think if the prices were really good we would've gotten more fruit... when we did eat lfrv we were eating watermelons and pineapples from regular grocery stores, there was a little bit of foraging(mangos) and lots of trees that we saw, but none of it really worked out that well, I also continuosly read about places that seemed like they would've been really nice and compatible with our lifestyle... My favorite place we visited was St. Petersberg, Ocala was also really nice, overall. Bradenton and Sarasota were also nice and we spent the majority of our time there.

I actually had a bad experience in Homestead, that I suppose could've happened anywhere, but the police there tried to say I was starving my child because he didn't know it was okay for toddlers to be breastfed. I told him my daughter consumed mostly breastmilk, she was about 1.5 at the time, I told him I was a breastfeeding counselor and it was perfectly healthy, and he was very rude to me with his assumptions. Anyway, we didn't stay there very long because it felt like a ton of bad vibes, just being there.

As for California, the San Jacinto Mountain area of SoCal is well known for their air quality, and it seems to me that Riverside, San Bernardino and parts of Orange and San Diego counties in that region are the best places in the state to live if you wanna be lfrv and live in a low-profile kinda place.

What about closer to Miami, like Hollywood, FL? Lots of fruit there, and other fruities, too, I believe. I think Doug Graham lived there (or nearby) for a long time.

There seems to be a strong 811 group in Bradenton Beach (west coast), too. I just joined their FB page LFRVBB. Check it out. Maybe people on there will give you some good suggestions.

I'm originally from Clearwater-Tampa area. I LOVED it. My husband is Palestinian and we just didn't notice the racism there that we do in other areas of the country. We miss it very much. Would like to move back someday. Don't give up your pursuit. You're on a brave and noble track. Much to be admired.  .....ana xoxo

St Augustine. Most perfect place on the planet.

How is it the most perfect place on the planet?

Hi. I know i'm coming to the party a little late....I've lived in florida all my life, currently Hollywood Florida.  I've lived in Miami - way too congested, South beach - fun but not  a family environment, The florida keys - being on the water was nice but with the exception of Key West & Marathon there are no beaches, also lived in Ocala - very depressing!  Florida is very expensive living , no matter where you live.  Some places a little more than others, like smaller towns may be less but seem to also be lacking in positive lifestyles.  Being fruitarian gets quite expensive.  Very few farmers markets around, even less organic markets (which you pay a very high price for).  However, as far as community and beauty, East Hollywood is definitely my favorite.
