hey,
i want to share with you something that i wrote and was published in the israeli media.
(TRIGGER WARNINGS- RAPE, VIOLENCE AGAINST ANIMALS)
It is not feminist to drink milk.
We are sitting around the table.
So many women.
Some of us were raped, some of us are volunteers, some of us are volunteers who were raped.
We are meeting just like that once in a while, community.
Empowering each other in a struggle against a world which is fundamentally masculine.
Scary world, A world that wounded or scarred us, a world in which the word “equality” is an ideal and not the reality.
She wants to serve me cake, containing milk.
I shake my head in denial “no way, I'm vegan”.
“Vegan?! Listen, I met once a vegan man who told me that cows are being raped. What kind of appalling comparison is that? How can you even bring up to your lips something so evil and hurtful? Does he even know what rape is?”
And she goes into an overflowing rage of biased views about vegans and barely allows my shocked eyes to insert a word.
I told her that one of the main reasons that led me to veganism was the sexual abuse I had experienced.
I told her. I told her that I know what helplessness is. I told her that I know that feeling, when someone is violent towards you. I told her that I know what it is to suffer, how it feels when you are being used, when something that is yours is taken, something that is taken without leave.
I told her, that I know what it is to be a living being that is treated as an object, commodity, air, a tool for fulfilment of desire.
I told her, how they insert the sperm into the cow, how they tear her calf away, how they milk her again and again and again and again, how her udders are filled with **** and inflammations, how they get rid of her when she is not profitable, and how we don't even need all of this.
I told her how every look in those eyes takes me back. That I want to scream. That she is a part of me. That until she is free, I would not be able to be liberated either.

And it is not feminist to drink milk.
It is not feminist to ask for equality for one group, while oppressing another.
It is not feminist to protect the body of the human woman, but to use the body of the others.
It is not feminist to demand freedom and imprison others.
It is not feminist to ask the people see beyond the body, that they stop objectifying and in parallel to pack animal corpses and buy them with a bar code in some supermarket.
It is not feminist.
It is shameful, it is outrageous, it is a crime and it is unforgivable.
Because, when I see those big and suffering eyes, no women's struggle will liberate the memories from me.

The dairy industry is indeed the cruelest of them all when it comes to the way animals are treated.

Permalink Reply by AJ on July 19, 2012 at 3:09am I've felt this too for some time now. Even watching a friend eat pizza is extremely triggering for me. Like Richie said, this is written very powerfully. Thank you<3
Permalink Reply by ednshell on July 19, 2012 at 3:30am Excellent work Shy! How great that you got this published! Have you gotten any feedback on how it was received by the public?
Permalink Reply by Shy Precious on July 19, 2012 at 5:13pm it was published in a famous israeli facebook page.
the comments were mixed.
i got alot of violent messages (someone even tried to convince me to commit suicide...)
but i also got a lot of support from the vegan community,
and many people wrote me that it gave them something to think about, which is great.
Permalink Reply by Helena McCann on July 19, 2012 at 6:19pm Beautiful and moving words, and I'm so glad you were strong enough to say what had to be said. I find the dairy industry hateful, too. When you're on the fruity path, your emotions are clearer and it's good to be guided by them. Thanks for this.
