***UPDATES***
Thought I'd provide an update for everyone regarding my detox. It has now lasted around a month, and over this period of time I've experienced intense waves of both diarrhea and constipation, both going in 3-4 day cycles. I've also had quite a bit of bloating, pimples breaking out on my face and body odor. It's interesting as in this time I've noticed that one of my severely receded gums that was once black is healing very quickly and turning back to pink. I really have no idea what this all means.
I've also gained 10+lbs of who knows what. My definition has disappeared and I have a very bloated, flabby look. Cellulite has returned on the backs of my thighs, and I can not fit into the majority of my pants and shorts. It's a bit concerning.
I've had constant indigestion and I've decided after a long month of digestive pain and discomfort to get a colonic. I'm going to hold out for a couple more weeks, but if this constipation/diarrhea cycle continues I really have to do something about it. I'm not usually an advocate for unnatural processes like this, but I'm becoming a little desperate at this point. Only around 30-50% of my usual excreted waste is coming out on any given day. I believe that this is cause for concern.
Please, if anyone has any insight on what could be happening, or any advice it would be greatly appreciated. Nothing has changed with my food intake, exercise, sun, or sleep patterns. I'm eating mostly mono meals and plenty of fresh local produce.

Hey everyone,
Just to provide a bit of background I recently started eating overt-free for the summer. I've been eating simple fruits and veggies for 10 days now. I did this last summer and experienced a wonderful feeling of lightness and an increase in energy and endurance.
In the first few days my digestion did some cleaning and I had already started to feel the benefits. I also had a white coated tongue for the first 5-6 days. Today, however, is a different story. I woke up and drank my usual litre of water and had a banana/date smoothie. For the rest of the day I had absolutely no desire to eat which is quite rare for me. I ate a few oranges at lunch and felt full immediately. Around 4pm I decided that I should probably eat something as I would be riding my bike to my Spanish lesson. I consumed a very small green smoothie, somewhere around 400 calories worth.
I usually consume 3000 calories per day but I could barely get the food down today. Within the last hour or so I've been experiencing some pretty intense pain in the region of my large intestine. I had a two very dark and flaky bowel movements that were quite uncomfortable. I feel extremely dehydrated so I've been drinking a lot of water to help the process along. Also within the last hour I've experienced a large amount of water retention, bloating and gas. I've had a few similar experiences in the past while my digestive system was cleansing but never before with this pain. It feels very similar to the pain from my monthly flow while I was eating a SAD diet.
Has anyone else experienced this before? I feel uneasy when there's pain and I don't understand the reason for it.

Wanted to point you to a high quality, fairly inexpensive source of B12 if you do decide you want to supplement. I know you're in Canada but I think this would probably still save you some money. See my post here from earlier this year (FYI I have no financial interest in the links provided, I just like to live frugally):

So I got my blood tests back today. Absolutely everything is well within normal range and nothing is even on the low end of normal. Not only this, but I have perfectly healthy organ function and such.
She mentioned that she rarely finds vegans or vegetarians deficient, but rather those who eat the standard diet. She finds vegans and vegetarians to be more conscious of their food choices which leads to superior health.

Always nice to have the validation from a medico that your efforts are being rewarded :)

Permalink Reply by ednshell on August 26, 2011 at 5:42pm Great news! Also, way to go sticking it out through the detox! It really is quite interesting, thanks for sharing about it.
I found this nice little video from 'The Fruitarian' on detox:
Permalink Reply by Godwin on August 26, 2011 at 6:23pm This is not detox. Many of these symptoms relates to this case:
Demyelination results in diverse symptoms determined by the functions of the affected neurons. It disrupts signals between the brain and other parts of the body; symptoms differ from patient to patient, and have different presentations upon clinical observation and in laboratory studies.
Typical symptoms include:
So this has to be taken very seriously and investigated. If it gets better by eating almonds, as in this case, then it is another indication that the myelin sheath is not getting the nutrition it needs for some reason. Blaming everything on detox is dangerous and irresponsible. Like the fruitarian said. People experience insomnia and irritability by not getting enough calories. Not because of detox. Could it be that in this case not enough fat was provided. Could it be that there is some previous condition going on. Food is not religion. Lets facts have the priority, at least in some cases. Better safe then sorry.

The craving for almonds supports my theory. Read below. Listen to your healthy cravings. The body is begging for material.
To make the lipids that the myelin sheath consists of, your body requires copper. The Linus Pauling Institute notes that the creation of these lipids rely upon cytochrome c oxidase, which is a copper-dependent enzyme. Several foods contain copper, such as beef liver, lentils, clams, almonds and semisweet chocolate.
The myelin sheath is comprised of protein and fat: the Franklin Institute notes that 70 percent of the myelin sheath comes from fat, and the remaining 30 percent is protein. The fat in the myelin sheath comes from fatty acids, with the most common type being oleic acid. During infancy, we get oleic acid from breast milk. As we start eating solid foods, we get oleic acid from several types of foods. Different oils, such as olive oil, contains oleic acid. Nuts, such as peanuts, almonds, macadamias and pecans contain the fatty acid. Avocados are also a source of oleic acid.
When I had been unhealthy vegetarian for many years. It is to say not eating enough of good food like fruit and vegetables and not supplementing B12 then I experienced strong cravings for liver sausage. There is a massive amount B12 and other nutrition in liver. The body was begging for it and I listened because I like to keep an open mind. Then the craving went away. I have heard off two other people that experienced the same. They are not vegetarians any more. Maybe they should have educated them selves a bit more. So knowledge, open mind and experience goes a long way to find what is true.
Permalink Reply by ednshell on August 27, 2011 at 12:22am Hi Godwin,
Detox is certainly way over used to explain away symptoms stemming from not following the 811 diet/lifestyle correctly. I think in this particular case it was most likely the body healing itself, doing some cleansing, detox. Tarah said she used to have bad digestive problems before going 811. Others with a history of digestive problems say they had similar experiences of having flare ups a few times after following 811 100% for a long while. Tarah did have some of the symptoms you describe above, but only after she ate the almonds. Also, Dr. Doug has talked about the myelin sheath and says that eating a variety of fruits and veggies will give us more than enough fat as well as other nutrients to keep us healthy in all aspects.
Permalink Reply by Tarah @ 40 Below Fruity on August 27, 2011 at 1:52am Yes, that's exactly right Ednshell. These symptoms showed up after the almonds, and also after my digestion and other symptoms had started to clear up.
Some of the things that cleared up when I started eating almonds:
very dry skin
bad digestion
body odor
breakouts
cellulite
bloating
Permalink Reply by Godwin on August 27, 2011 at 3:17am I don´t get it. Maybe I have read something wrong. The symptoms came after she ate the almonds. But now she is feeling better after she started to eat almonds. Did I go wrong somewhere. There is certainly a strong link between our gut and the brain and each can affect the other I believe. Just like with myself.
My liver is sensitive and I have in the past experienced dizziness when I did not eat right and specially in relation to fatty stuff. That is the liver for sure. So any damage or sensitivity in the digestive system can cause different symptoms for sure.
Also stress affects the Myelin Sheath and in this case, there was great deal of stress after experiencing a shock after disaster I believe.
I am not saying that I am right, but I am a bit confused about the almonds being a cause of bad symptoms and then helping to alleviate the symptoms.
Permalink Reply by Tarah @ 40 Below Fruity on August 27, 2011 at 3:21am The hallucinations started a couple of nights after first eating almonds. All of the other symptoms were almost completely cleared up by that point. The episode only lasted around 2 hours and I haven't felt anything similar since. This is what Ednshell meant.
My blood tests show that my liver is in perfect health.
Surprisingly enough, I felt very little stress after the Tsunami. Everyone seems to be convinced that I was traumatized, but I felt oddly peaceful. I was also watching "The Secret" every day for 75 days and listening to guided meditations and feeling deep gratitude...So I really wasn't at all stressed.
The almonds have indeed cleared up all of the detox symptoms I was experiencing.
