What would you do???
I don't think I can do a waterfast...when I get hungry I feel weak and like I'm about to pass out. Water makes me more hungry too.
My flight is from San Francisco to Miami. Then from Miami to South America.
I called the airport and the lady did not know if I could take fruit with me. She said "a couple of oranges I think would be fine" I'm taking like 20 peeled!
I'm hoping they'll let me in with fruit!!
What happens if they don't? Do I get a few Odwallas? I guess I could do dates but I'd like something more filling or I might end up eating at the cooked processed carbs on the plane.
I've flown all over and never had a problem, EXCEPT with US customs. They will confiscate any fruit you have. Doesn't matter the form; whole, wrapped, bagged, whatever. No fruit. Last flight I had like 5 Mamay Sapote in my bag. I realized on the flight there was no way I was gonna get these beauties into the country, so I cut them all up (on my little airplane tray!) and put them in a ziplock baggie. My sapote were still confiscated at customs. They don't even have a list of no-entry fruit; its a blanket NO FRUIT policy.
Luckily its never been a problem for me because the US is my usual destination. The one time I had a connecting flight from India to Costa Rica in NYC, I only had like 6 hours to go after my bananas were confiscated. And like, come on, 6 HOURS. Not like its 6 days. No big deal.
You can bring fruit on a plane with you, but you can't cross an international border with it. So you have to eat it all before you get off the plane or it will be confiscated. Even worse, if you don't declare it when you get to the other country you could be fined and even arrested. The sniffer dogs even smelled the fruit leftovers on me once and I had to pass through the special agricultural customs section for further inspection. I once had my fruit confiscated as I did one stop over from a short Canadian flight to the States that was then connecting to Costa Rica. If I had had a longer flight or one that didn't stop over, I could have had enough time to eat it. Bad planning on my part. Many airlines even offer a fruit meal if you order it in advance, check on their internet sites. The airports usually have poor fruit choices, the oranges are usually the best. The bananas are not ripe. the apples are waxed-none of it is organic and it all costs a fortune. Salads can be a decent find because they usually put the dressing in a separate little pouch. Sometimes, what I'll do is go overt fat free weeks before the flight because unsalted nuts and seeds are generally very easy to find at airports and then I'll add them to my salad so the flight days becomes a high fat exception day. You can sometimes find relatively healthy cooked starches like jacket potatoes without seasonings, oil etc. that you can add to a salad. You could even microwave them yourself to bring along since this is still a healthier/less expensive choice than almost everything served in airports and airplanes. The most important thing to do on flights is to keep well hydrated because the climate controls on the planes dehydrate you like crazy. Walking frequently to the bathroom as well as doing other exercises will help prevent deep vein thrombosis which is a serious health risk from sitting too long in a cramped airplane seat. Finally, bring nightshades, earplugs and a neckpillow to sleep. If you can manage even an hour's sleep you'll be doing yourself a whole lot of good when you arrive-much more refreshed and less intoxicated by unhealthy environmental exposures.
