30 Bananas a Day!

Told him I went high carb raw vegan, and that I wanted to get started on methylcobalamin injections. He said I needed to get my levels checked first and that insurance would not pay for it, I should of told him I would of just paid out of pocket now that I think about it. He rushes people out of there, I need to go in with a written list next time.

He gave me a lab order slip and I'll go tomorrow to get blood taken. How long till I hear the results you think?

Is methylcobalamin prescription only in the U.S. or more specifically Massachusetts? What about the syringes, prescription? 3ml 25x25 syringes I heard is good. I could just go buy it and shoot it, but i never got an approval from him for that.

When I told him I was eating 4000 calories a day of raw fruit he didn't know what to say.

The spell check for "methylcobalamin" only comes up with "methamphetamine". Damn narrow minded spell-check dictionary writers.

Whoah whoah whoah hold up there buddy. You went to your doctor and asked for methyl shots... without even checking to see if you had a deficiency first? I don't recommend getting ANY supplement unless you actually need it. Sure, there is a "B12 shot" culture around here where people don't even bother to get blood tests, they just order methyl shots off the 'net "just in case." Why waste your money and inject something into your veins unless you actually need to? You should have gone to the doctor with the intention of checking your B12 level, not with the intention of getting a shot.

Second, the blood test you are going to get is completely useless. You need to get a uMMA test. That is the only accurate B12 test. The blood test measures inactive analogues which clog up your receptors and can (will) give you a false reading.

I went to my doctors a few weeks ago with problems i was having on my previous diet (which the symptoms had gone away since becoming raw vegan but i wanted checked out anyway).  I told him i had changed my diet to raw vegan and after a while he questioned my motives for changing to eating this way as though he thought i was crazy, i just replied i was doing it for health reasons.

My blood tests showed up with lowish levels of iron, a b12 reading of 234 and a platelets reading of 60 (normal range is 150-450).  The platelets reading concerned the doc so he referred me to a haemotologist which I have an appointment on Monday about, this low reading makes sense with some of the health issues I was experiencing pre 811.  I only discovered yesterday that my sister has b12 injections on the NHS every 3 months because she can't absorb so maybe i have the same issue, i'm sort of hoping it is so that I can get the shots for free.

I recently bought sublingual methylcobalamin off Amazon and had one of them in the week but won't take another until after my appointment with the haemotologist as it may affect any tests, I hope the single one hasn't muddied any waters as it is.

It is entirely up to you David how you approach your b12 issue but personally I would supplement sublingually unless I was found to have the intrinsic factor missing, in which case injecting may be the best option.

Good luck : )

I agree with Peter. Have your level checked first and then take it from there.

I'm not sure what test he is sending me to get, haven't gone yet, dealing with transportation stuff.

I've been curious about just getting the shot, but have been waiting for the tests first, will continue to wait till I see him again.

Unless you have a deficient, why would you need supplements, let alone injections?

don't jump to injections, dude. It can take years to become deficient in B12....

Does this work in Mass? Because when I went there and asked for a urinary MMA the lady at the desk said they could only do what the doctor ordered, unless she meant to say insurance would only cover it if the doctor ordered it.

I also asked the phlebotomist if they would do any tests and she said they need a doctors referral.

It was a blood test, I got it done anyway. Should I call my doctor and ask for a urinary MMA? Or wait till I see him again, or wait till he calls with the results?

I asked my doctor about a urinary MMA test, and he was like "we don't do those, I don't know why you would do that?" and he gave me a blood MMA test.

I get the feeling that's what I'll hear when I ask about it more.

Hi, I lived in MA for years and was quite ill for a wile.  The impression that I got was that if you wanted you doctor to run a lab, within reason, they have to do it.  Otherwise Im pretty sure you can sue them for malpractice.  Also if you had a B12 deficiency you would probably know it sooner then later.  It makes you feel horrible.  good luck!

Did you have a deficiency, what does It feel like?
