30 Bananas a Day!

"I have bad news for you Tom. I was speaking to a nurse the other day and she told me that it's DANGEROUS to eat more than 4 bananas a day."

It's so difficult not to get angry when people say things like this to you. I just replied that is was absolute ignorant crap and asked what a nurse would know about health anyway considering all they do is treat the sick (apologies to any lfrv nurses who obviously know a lot about health).
It was a friend of my Mom who told me this and she is still down stairs talking to my Mom.

My response immediately after I post this is to go into town and buy 2 massive shopping bags full of bananas and unload them right in front of her! How do you like them apples!!...er bananas...

watch out, gorillas do gain weight after eating a lot of bananas :)
yeah, muscle weight... :)
I would say is dangerous to listen nutrition advice from someone who will die of cancer, heart attack or diebetes for 99 percent. Anyway she was maybe right, its very dangerous to eat more than 4 pieces of any fruit a day or many vegetables, because the profit of farmaceutic industry on such a person could decrease rapidly....
my friend told me eating one bunch of bananas a day (6-8) will be way too much potassium and cause heart problems....

I didn't know what to say to that one...
lol! will do!!!
Yes this was the reason that she said to me. More than 4 bananas gives you a dangerous amount of potassium which is bad for the heart so she said. Unbeleivable!
I had my nephrologist (kidney doctor) tell me that, like many have already said, too much potassium can cause heart problems. I have had blood drawn many a time and have her call me to tell me that my potassium is way too high and suggests that I eat some heavy dairy and/or a cola beverage to bring it down. Needless to say, I blew off her advice and ate a honeydew melon...
I have been hospitalized though from hyperkalemia, but that was prior to 811, and ever since then I have had no problems...everyone is different I guess... rock on
I can relate to this. I was under medication for hyperkalemia, had serious kidney problems. Which is why I didn't start eating 811rv sooner because I thought I was gonna die from eating all of that potassium (I truly could've), especially since they didn't "allow" me to eat fruits, only small portions of canned/cooked fruit and even gave me different charts with lots of fruits & veg I shouldn't be eating.. it was the hardest thing ever. Because at the time I was a gluten & soy free vegan, and they were also saying I couldn't eat legumes, whole grains (too much protein), or potatoes unless you soak em for like a day to leech out the potassium. Also, I was chronically dehydrated all the time.

Eeeek! My best option was higher fat 100% raw for several months, & once I ditched the meds I started slowly incorporating more and more fruit and of course pushing myself with the exercise again (was very weak). I then transitioned to LFRV in Jan 09, started eating cooked veg though as not to overwhelm my kidneys (this all happened the year before that)... haven't had any problems. But the secret is to eat very slowly. I have a tendency to get down on fruit and just eat so fast my body goes wild. On some days I have to eat more smaller meals, while others I eat only a couple of large meals. :)

Plum Bottom, how is your kidney function currently?
Plum and Paula, where were you both getting so much potassium to get hospitalized for hyperlakemia if it was before eating hecka bananas? or is it like a thing like how high blood sugar is caused by high blood fat?
UPDATE!! I got back from the shops and unpacked my new bananas then went outside and found them eating my old bananas!!! SHOCK!!!
I said "You'd better be careful of those, they're deadly!"

On a serious note though why would a nurse say a thing like this about bananas? Is it because of all the patients she's treated with potassium overdose?

"MY GOD DOC - WE'VE GOT ANOTHER BANANA OD!"
"ANOTHER??? DANG THATS 7 ALREADY THIS MORNING. NURSE 1ml ADRENALINE ..."

We have an epidemic of heart disease and she points out the risk of eating bananas because of potassium damaging the heart? How about the risk of eating meat or dairy or processed foods or drinking alcohol or smoking cigarettes? A nurse would be dealing with the results of these things every day! In fact it's most likely all she sees most days.

This may be my last post as I've eaten over 10 bananas a day for the over 3 months. Goodbye cruel world...
Aye, anyone whom finds out I've been eating over 20 bananas a day gets all concernicus. Over three a day is pretty wild in this part o town!
