i've had pears that took 3 weeks to ripen , i but those way ahead of time when on sale.
mangos are hard to get good. look for more red and smell them to see what is sweeter

yellow more success for me

thanks, so im a little confused.  look for more red but youve had more success with yellow?

Order yourself a case or two of dates and acquaint yourself with Datorade. Also get a case of bananas. They're much more dependable for ripening and taste.

ok awesome thank you.  so do u recomend putting dates in a ziplock bag and taking out the air and putting them in fridge.  thats what ive done and they seemed to stay ripe pretty well.  i did that becuz i found alot of them to be bad.. also i once got a few bags of bananas and they never ripened with spots, they just got soft and a lighter shade of green(igot them when they were really green) and they never tasted that good.

I second Vicki's advice, bananas and datorade! :)  I take out enough dates for a few days at a time to store on the counter so they are easy to pit.  The rest go in the fridge which can store for up to a year there and they can store for years in the freezer.  Dates are an everyday food and a great back up.  Bananas are usually good but sometimes I get a bad batch that just never ripen.  I highly recommend Earth bananas @ whole foods.  They have the best taste and are grown more sustainably than certified organic bananas.

awesome great advice thanks alot

No worries, Ronnie.  Picking out quality fruit will come with experience.  But in the meantime, this link should help:http://www.30bananasaday.com/notes/How_to_pick_ripe_fruit

Also, despite you best guess and efforts, should fruit ever just not ripen or simply be terrible, as it sounds like yours is, by all means return it for a refund or credit!  It's beneficial for both you and the store, who needs to know that that batch was unsat, and that they need to be more careful of what they stock in the future.

ok thanks

by all means return it for a refund or credit!

Yes, yes, yes, I return bad fruit all the time.
