I went on a day kayaking trip with a bunch of guys (possibly my fist mistake lol) I had sooo much fun! untill one of them caught a turtle and decided to kill it cook it and eat it. I put up the biggest fight possible.. i was bound to loose but i was going to try my hardest. they said "hes already dead" he clearly wasnt... he was just terrified from me running with him and people trying to kill him cook him and eat him!! well I lost and they cracked his shell open and he was still moving... I threw up and got laughed at. this whole ordeal lasted about 30-45 minutes... and the took took bites of him.. im sorry but when you step into nature have some respect.. that is their home, you would s*** your pants if someone came to your house and did that...
my generation of people have failed to learn respect. and to ridicule the beliefs of others.

At least they ate the turtle. I have more respect for hunters who kill and eat their game than 95 percent of the population who get their killings in a shiny, artificially-pink package.

Permalink Reply by Josette on May 25, 2012 at 12:08am I know what you mean. I had been raised to eat animal flesh, but we are disassociated from it by the titles (sweet music loving cows = beef, cute little pigs = pork). But when I literally think about eating an animal... really, REALLY think about it, I get sick.
Two examples -
1) Went on our quest to find a new favorite Mexican restaurant a few months ago, as ours went out of business. We ended up at a fancy one, but the items on the fancy menu made me sick. How could they serve quail, frogs legs, etc? It literally ruined the meal for me... and any time I want to feel that way when I smell the familiar savory odors from a neighborhood grill, I remember how that menu made me feel.
2) On our honeymoon, sick as I was, we had already paid for an excursion off the cruise to see a sea turtle area... so off we went. They were adorable!!! You can't touch them in the USA, but here you could come up to the tanks and touch the baby ones. If you touched the tail in the water, they would ZIPPPP away so fast! Picking one up, it gets docile and relaxed. If you let it see the water, it becomes antsy (instinct I guess) to get back in! So much fun. Oh yeah, and one peed on me, so that was funny.
Anyway, we walked through the gift shop on the way out. They had a cafe inside where they sold... yes, you already know... turtle soup. Apparently, turtle is a mainstay in the island diet.
I was instantly sick, and thought they were barbaric.
The wacky thing about all this is the way you see things is the way it is... to you. They think it's normal. I used to think eating animal flesh was normal. Desensitizing by calling it beef, pork, or Soylent Green doesn't change what it is - it just changes when you see it for WHAT it is. Cow, pig, people. ew
Journey on - you don't need their opinion on you... you do you, and shine on.

sometimes the cards are stacked too high against for that moment.
however, the fact that you put up a fight will stay with them. i know that doesn't help the turtle, but your protest at least will echo somewhere inside them.
sometimes that's the best that can be done under the circumstances.
it's important to remember martin luther king's words:
History will have to record that the greatest tragedy of this period of social transition was not the strident clamor of the bad people, but the appalling silence of the good people.
your voice pierced through the clamor straight and true.

sometimes you have to 'make' the people you want around you. i think you are doing that.
that is why it so good to have you as part of our family:

Those guys don't sound like great friends honestly. If I wanted to do something and my friend was uncomfortable with it for moral/ethical reasons, I just plain wouldn't do it out of respect for that friend. That just makes sense to me. Can't believe they were disrespectful not only to nature, but to you as well!
Who eats turtle anyway? Seriously.
