I pressed out 64 oz of OJ this morning but couldn't get down but 54 oz. Anyways after I got it all down about 15 minutes later it felt like someone lit a fire in my stomach. It took about 30 minutes for it to subside. I am assuming I had some unripe oranges in the mix?? By the way how can you tell when a orange is ripe enough?

Unripe citrus can be very dangerous. It's hard to tell if citrus is unripe when we drink it, but much easier to tell when eating it whole. Whether juicing or eating whole, ensure your oranges are heavy for their size and a deep rich orange colour. Avoid any and all oranges with green, yellow and light orange colours.

Right now in the U.S. the navels being shipped are being picked unripe, they burn your mouth when you taste them. Tasting them is the only sure way to tell if they are ripe. They can be super orange and still be unripe. You can ask for a taste test and the produce person will gladly give you a slice.
I'm not sure about the Florida oranges right now, they should always be super sweet, that is when you know they are ripe. I have noticed that it takes about 2 months or more of the oranges being on the market before they start picking them ripe. So keep getting taste tests once every week or two. Valencia season is now over for us being shipped to anyway. They are the best! November and December are Valencia heaven in the U.S.
I would say wait another month at least for the Navels to get good and sweet. If you taste them and say these are okay, then they are not ripe, if you taste them and say WOW! Then they are ripe! :)

Permalink Reply by ednshell on February 5, 2012 at 5:53am The recipe may call for 16 oz. but Dr. D has said those recipes were written with a newbie in mind, he would say drink as much as you care for.
Permalink Reply by doghouse.reilly on February 5, 2012 at 6:01am Exactly. Just because the recipe called for 16 oz doesn't mean Graham would say to limit o.j. to that amount. That's like saying the recipe called for 5 bananas, so Graham says never eat more than 5 bananas.
Permalink Reply by DUNCAN LEWIS on February 5, 2012 at 6:13am I still dont get how juicing is not processing. Every other principle is about eating a traditional jungle diet. No juicing would have gone on. No other animal juices its food.
Permalink Reply by ednshell on February 5, 2012 at 6:49am The most important part about juicing is that you want to avoid losing any part of the whole food, so with oranges you lose very little with juicing, you get most of the pulp. Dr. Doug teaches that consuming smoothies and apple sauce and juiced oranges causes no problems to our digestive system. Most people experienced with doing 811 also report having no problems eating this way.

Permalink Reply by Lily on February 5, 2012 at 7:10am I'll chime in since i LOVE o.j. and i drink the juice of 10 red oranges almost daily with no ill effect.
This is what I've learnt:
1. oranges have to be red and sweet.. the redder, the better.
2. they'd better be organic
3. the stomach can handle it better if you stir in the pulp
4. the stomach can handle it better if you drink it in the morning
I never drink more than the equivalent of 10 oranges though, which is probably half a liter.
Not just because it's too much acid at one go, but also cause that's already close to 1.000 calories!!
so that's plenty for one meal for me :)
All the best
