I keep seeing all these posts by some newbies who are having trouble consuming enough calories. I'm on the opposite end. I'm eating so many calories that I'm concerned. Yesterday for example, I ate 4,000 calories and I still wanted more, but at that point I was afraid to have more fruit! I know that everyone here says not to restrict fruit calories & such, but I'm fairly sedentary (I'm trying to heal from a history of fibromyalgia/chronic fatigue syndrome & depression, etc.), so I'm concerned that I'll gain weight. At 5'4" I'm about 115 lbs, but have a small frame, so any amount of excess fat seems like a lot on me. I feel I need to lose weight (fat anyway), not gain more! I really want to start exercising more, but I'm not physically to the point where I can do much yet. I've been trying to walk, but that hasn't been a possibility every day. I think part of the problem with eating so much is that it's taking a lot of fruit to make me feel satisfied in order to avoid the cravings for cooked food. But, it seems like I keep needing more and more & need to literally stuff myself to keep away from the food that makes me sick. Anyway, I've been wondering what's wrong with me that I need so many calories while everyone else seems to have trouble getting enough?!!! Will I eventually be satisfied on less?

Permalink Reply by Jupiterinka on May 26, 2012 at 11:40am Great reply. Thanks :) It makes a lot of sense. I notice sometimes when I eat a lot of fruit, I get a sudden burst. I've even caught myself laughing with my kids more when I do that. That's the kind of person I want to be; I haven't had that kind of cheerfulness in such a very long time. So, being consistent & eating the stuff that makes me feel that way is key!
In terms of sleep, if I don't get enough, it seems to set me up to crave the cooked foods for some reason. It also makes me depressed if I'm sleep deprived. When I have to get up so early, I try to go to bed as early as I can, but it's not always enough. I try to rest a lot on the weekend, though.

It's a pretty simple formula, actually. Less sleep means your body is using more energy, thus it requires more sustenance. More sleep allows your body to rest more completely and generally impacts the balance of your waking state (people who sleep enough are usually less stressed, etc., which also uses up energy). There's a good deal of science out there about sleep deprivation and the effects of it on the body and mind.
One other thing to consider, which I think has been mentioned here, is that women should keep an eye on their cycle in regards to how much energy they need, as it'll vary throughout the month. If you're gonna err in how much fruity carbs you eat, it's better to err on the side of too many instead of too few.
Always remember that health is holistic, and like Doug Graham says: "your health is only as good as your weakest link"
Permalink Reply by Matt on May 26, 2012 at 3:35am For me it's all about how much time I have in a day. Some days I'm incredibly busy where I'll only get like 3-3500 calories but I like to get 4-5000 and I've even hit 7000 calories. Don't worry about it, just eat!
Permalink Reply by AJ on May 26, 2012 at 4:55am There is sooo nothing wrong with you I'm a newbie too (almost 6 mos!!) and I eat just as much! No weight gain other than water at first but that is long gone. I have a lot of healing to do too, for other reasons, but your body needs all those calories to repair itself! That's why you're craving such a high volume of food. The less you eat, the longer it will take your body to heal to the point where you can exercise and therefore, the longer you will have to deal with these issues! Eat as much as you freakin can and don't stop for any reason other than complete and utter satiety ;)
Permalink Reply by Jon Fergus on May 26, 2012 at 5:47am These are great points. In the beginning, I spent several weeks (perhaps a couple of months) just pounding back the fruit and lying around, resting and letting everything heal, while also letting myself get used to fruit being my staple food. My only exercise was being on my feet for 4 hours every second night, for work (serving). From my perspective, quite a few people go awol because they over exercise in the beginning and don't allow their bodies to go through the healing process.
Glad to see you're still cruising along AJ :)
Permalink Reply by dangermouse on May 26, 2012 at 5:33am Make sure you're eating lots of greens, too. If your body is healing it's going to need the minerals, and greens are super important if you have a history of depression as well. Plus the extra protein in the greens might help satiate you. When I first started I had to eat up to 7000 calories/day for a week or more before my period to stave off cravings, and I still lost weight while not being particularly active, so don't worry about that. After a while I didn't feel the need to eat so much.
Permalink Reply by Jupiterinka on May 26, 2012 at 11:45am Yes, I don't think I get enough greens yet. I'm going to order a scale on amazon so I can weigh it. It makes sense about need the greens for minerals & protein. Before I started on green smoothies, I never ate ANY greens really, so I'm sure my body is hugely deficient. But, I'm working on that now.

Permalink Reply by ORGANIC811LFRV on May 26, 2012 at 11:53am First of all you can't get fat eating fruit. 2ndly are you also getting your greens in each day? At least a lb per day. Green smoothies, salads, just plain with other vegies. We need both. How much water are you drinking? How much sleep are you getting? I won't even ask you what you were eating before you got onto 811. I do hope you are avoiding all processed, packaged, canned, dehydrated phood. Only ripe, raw, and hopefully organic produce is what we promote here.
What kind of meds are you on? These will definitely effect your hunger.
I too was not allowed additional exercise until I healed from a long illness. Thank goodness for raw, greens, fruits and organic. Nothing else. My body fat when I started was 49%. My weight was 175. My height is 5'2" This was back in November of last year. Now it is 27% and my wt is 110. I am cured of many illnesses.
I refuse to take meds and that probably saved my life.
As to the cravings: If it is sweet related do more fruit. If it is salt, eat greens and tomatoes and celery. You need natural sodium.
Are you eating ANYTHING else other than fruit and hopefully vegies??? Raw or cooked. If it isn't raw it isn't valuable nutrition. Any beans? Rice? Grains? Dairy? Caffeine?
All these do contribute to your body not being able to heal. With what you have going against your health right now, it will take time to adjust. How long have you been doing this program? Are you tracking? Are you staying within 80/10/10 guidelines?
It's all in the details.
Permalink Reply by Charisma on May 26, 2012 at 1:17pm Your body has a lot of healing to do, it is going to need as much fuel and nutrients as it can get in order to do this so eat up I say and good luck with your recovery. My sister has had CFS and all of the rest that goes with it chronically (mostly bed bound) for over 30 years, she now has diabetes and a host of other ailments on top of it. You are doing the right thing for your body with this lifestyle so keep going and let your body heal.
