Im doing my second attempt with going no poo. first time I tried it I simply rinsed my hair with water, and it was a disaster ! my hair got so greasy from it that I didn't feel like leaving my apartment. and it wasn't even dirty beforehand !
so now I wanted to try out the baking soda-approach, hoping for a more gradual transition. - I don't mind my hair being a little greasy during this phase, but I don't want people to think that Im insanitary either ;)
SO today was my first day. It has been 5days since my last hair wash, although normally Ill wait 7-8 days in between washing. I wanted to break the wash-cycle a little early so that the risk of my hair turning out like last time, would be smaller.
step1 - I mixed 3tbs of baking soda w 150ml of water.
step2 - after rinsing my hair in warm water for a couple of minutes, I put the mixture in my hair and massaged it in for another cpl of minutes, and then I rinsed it out completely.
step3 - panic ? I must say that my hair feels really thick and unmanageable ! It hasn't dried yet, so idk how it will turn out, but experience tells me that when it feels like this wet, it wont improve much in its dry state.
what do you say ? do you think that I need to just stick it out, and maybe wash it everyday for a while w the baking soda until my hair adjusts ? or should I try adding lemon to the mixture maybe ? Im open to any suggestions and/or stories of experience
thanks fruities !
Permalink Reply by Dori on June 29, 2012 at 10:06pm I mix 1 tsp of baking soda in 200 ml hot water, and leave it to cool down.
Then I wet my hair, pour the mixture and massage it (like shampooing, but without foam).
Then I rinse it with water.
And after I finish it with the 2 cups of water mixed with 1 tsp of vinegar.
Works perfectly.
And your hair won't be greasy.
;)
Permalink Reply by sannabanna on June 30, 2012 at 7:55am wow, I used way too much baking soda then. haha, that explains why my hair has been powdery today. it looks kinda grey. oops
and has this worked for you form the very beginning ? you didn't go through the greasy haired phase ?
Permalink Reply by Dori on June 30, 2012 at 6:46pm Well, it was pretty tricky for the first month, where I had to wash it every two days (I had to wash it almost every day when I used shampoo). In that first month my hair was waxy like. Really, like I was putting melted candles in my hair ;)
But now after over one year it works perfectly. I wash it every 4-5 days. Sometimes longer, depends on the fats I eat.
And you need to buy wooden brush and brush it everyday in the beginning. It helps with distributing your natural oils. Later not so much.
Eventually I'm hoping to go completely off baking soda also and just use water

woa, so depending on how much fat you eat your hair will be more or less greasy ? thats amazing, I didn't realize that the two factors affected each other. but it makes good sense
Permalink Reply by Sweetfruitlover on June 30, 2012 at 1:36am I just stopped using shampoo and didn't ever use baking soda. But I did taper off the shampoo instead of just stopping directly from a daily washing. I was down to once every two weeks when I finally let it go altogether. For a month it was fine, and then it got into this awful greasy helmet phase where I just put it back into a ponytail and put up with it for a couple weeks. But once it broke through that phase it's been amazing ever since! I get so many compliments on my hair now, and I haven't washed it in over two and a half years, lol. I love telling people that when they ask me what I do with it. Good luck!
Permalink Reply by sannabanna on June 30, 2012 at 7:42am thanks :) I just can't find a hairdo that'll cover up the greasy spots. did a ponytail really cover it up for you?

I stopped shampooing in April, and I finally love my hair (it used to be dry, thick and frizzy-I'd have to wash it at night, flat iron it, and then sleep on it for it to look decent).
I mix 1Tbsp of baking soda with about a cup of warm water to wash it, then rinse the ends with 1Tbsp of apple cider vinegar with a cup of water (the small plastic kids squeezy drink bottles from the dollar store work great for applying it). I washed with this a few times a week for the first month or so, but now I only need to use it once a week or less-I just use water every few days.
I went through the waxy buildup phase as well-my brush would be coated in nasty gunky stuff, but it seems to have disappeared in the past 2 weeks.
Just stick with it-it gets better. Good luck!

Permalink Reply by sannabanna on July 2, 2012 at 12:18am thanks kevin. do you rinse your hair after applying the lemon juice ?
Permalink Reply by Athena on July 1, 2012 at 1:17am I'm thinking of going poo-free once and for all starting Friday next week since I have 3 weeks summer holiday. Because I dye my hair every 2 months with black henna and indigo, I will refrain from lemon juice, apple cider vinegar, and baking soda.
I'd like to know from all of you poo-free people how long you had your "yucky phases" with your hair as a result of adjusting to poo-freedom.
Permalink Reply by sannabanna on July 2, 2012 at 12:21am yes please ! me to. good thinking athena, my holiday also just starting today, so this is the perfect time to try out the no poo thing. I just washed my hair for the second time today /using less baking soda than last time, lol) and it seems to be working a little better. my hair doesn't look greasy, just a little more frizzy and it's not a volumous at the top part. but hopefully this will improve as I continue
good luck :)
